Years RedeemedIsaiah 51:11

The Ledger of Years

This message is for the man who keeps an exact private account of every year he wasted and can name what each one went on without pausing to think

The lamp is the sort with a green glass shade and a pull chain, and it makes one bright circle on the table and leaves the rest of the room to itself. Half past eleven. The house is quiet in the particular way a house is quiet when everybody else in it has gone up.

He is not writing anything. That is worth saying at the start, because you might picture a man with a book and a pen, and there is no book. The account is in his head and it has been kept there for a very long time, and it is exact.

He could start anywhere. That is the thing about it. Give him a year, any year, and the answer arrives before you have finished asking. Not a vague sense of a bad patch. The year, and what that year went on, and what it cost him in the thing he cannot get more of, which is not the sort of cost you can put a figure to and never was. He knows which year the drift started. He knows the year he could have turned it and did not. He knows the exact stretch in the middle where the whole thing became simply what his life was, rather than a phase in it.

He does this most nights. Not for long. Ten minutes, maybe fifteen, under the lamp, the way another man might check the locks.

And it is not self-pity. If you told him he was wallowing he would look at you with genuine surprise, because it does not feel like wallowing from the inside. It feels like accuracy. Somebody in the world ought to know exactly what happened, he thinks, and there is only one candidate, and so he keeps the account, and he keeps it honest, and he never rounds anything in his own favor. He is scrupulous about that. He would be ashamed to make it look better than it was.

He turns his hands over on the table and looks at them. Sixty-three. The hands are older than he expects them to be, every time.

Then he pulls the chain and the circle of light goes out, and he sits for a moment in the dark before he stands up, and he goes to bed, and he will do this again tomorrow.

You know this and I am not going to ask you for your numbers. You keep a version of it. Yours may be shorter or longer, it may run to a decade or to eighteen months that decided everything after them, and you can recite it, and you have never once said any of it out loud to a living person. And underneath the reciting there is a thing you have quietly concluded, which is that somebody has to hold the account and the job appears to be yours.

I am not going to tell you the years were secretly useful. I want to show you what God does with years, in a book written to people who had lost a great many of them.

The redeemed of the LORD shall return

Isaiah 51 is spoken to a people who could do the arithmetic on themselves better than any prophet could. Exiles. A generation that could name the year it went wrong and the decisions that took them there, living a long way from where they were supposed to be, and there was no argument available to them, because the account was accurate.

Into that, this.

Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.Isaiah 51:11

Read what is missing from it. There is no hearing. There is no review of conduct at the gate, no interview, no requirement that they first account for how they came to be so far away. The word used for them is not the survivors and not the reformed. The redeemed. It is a bought word: somebody with the right to act settled what was owed and took them back, and the taking back is what the verse is about, and the returning happens with singing rather than with an explanation.

You are the redeemed of the Lord, and there is no account for you to present at the gate. I am not putting a kind opinion over your night. Scripture says the redeemed of the Lord return with singing, and it is the Holy Spirit, and not the pleasantness of that sentence, who takes it off a page and into a room with a green lamp in it.

And I want to be exact about what is not being said, because you would spot it instantly if I fudged it. Nothing in that verse says the exile did not happen. Isaiah does not tidy the years away, and neither will I. The exile stayed in the history of that nation, and it is read out to this day, and God never once required them to pretend it away in order to come home. That is the shape of this all the way through, and it is the whole reason a book keeps a record and a verdict on the same page. The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both are true tonight, and neither makes the other a liar.

Before we go further there is one thing I have to put down plainly, because it matters for more people than will admit it. Some of what a man has filed under his own free choices was not free. If somebody worked on you, wore you down over months, made the door hard to find, or leaned on you until agreeing was simply the way to make it stop, that was not you choosing. A pushed signature is not a signature. You were never as free in some of those years as your own account has assumed, and God has always known which ones. It is written that the Lord knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can tell a man the difference between what he did and what was done to him.

Who told you the job was yours

Here is the question I would ask if you and I were at that table, and it is not rhetorical. Who appointed you the clerk?

Because somebody has to hold the account, you decided, long ago and probably without noticing you were deciding. And you looked round, and nobody else was applying for the post, and you took it, and you have worked that shift every night since, honestly and without rounding anything in your own favor.

But the post was already filled. That is the thing you have not been told. In the book of Joel, God speaks to a people whose years were eaten, and He does not say that the eating was fine, and He does not explain what it was for. He says, I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. Restore is His verb. He is the subject of the sentence. There is nothing in the line about the people producing a reckoning first, and there is nothing in it saying the years were secretly a training course.

You have a God who counts years as something He restores and not as something He audits. It is written in Joel 2:25 in exactly those words, and His Spirit is the one who makes an ancient promise about crops and locusts land on a man of sixty-three looking at his own hands.

So the thing being handed back to you tonight is small and exact and I would rather name it than talk about redemption in general. It is the account itself. Not the memory, which is yours and which God has never asked you to lose, and not the truthfulness, which is one of the better things about you. The keeping of it. The nightly shift. The office of clerk in your own case, which you have held without appointment for decades. You are relieved of that post, and the case has been taken over by the One who paid for it. Scripture says God is the one who justifies and asks who is left to bring a charge, and the same Spirit who wrote that through Paul is the one who quiets a room where a man has been reciting.

And notice what is not being demanded of you here. Not penance. Not a stretch of good years to balance the other ones. Not service offered to make it up. There is no arrangement in Scripture where a man works off his own years, because the price was settled by somebody else and adding to a settled thing is not devotion, it is a refusal to let it be settled. You have been bought back whole, and there is nothing outstanding that your remaining years are supposed to cover. His word says it is finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes three words spoken on a hill land on a man who has been quietly working overtime.

The breakthrough

Nothing about the years changes tonight. They happened and they are yours and I am not going to describe them or ask you to. What God does about the ache, whether the reciting stops this week or takes a while to go quiet, is His to decide and He answers as He answers. I will not put a date on Him.

But the case is closed and that is what you came here for. You are standing in front of a settled verdict, and it was settled without you being asked to contribute to it. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is named in Scripture as the one who bears witness with a man's own spirit about what he is now.

And there is one more thing, and it is the part that will take longest to believe. There is no sentence being passed. You have been half expecting one for years, and bracing for it, and preparing your honest account so that when it finally came you would at least have been truthful. It is not coming. The One who could pass it has already handed over what it took to make sure it would not. You have been redeemed of the Lord, and the returning happens with singing rather than with an explanation. Isaiah 51:11 says exactly that, and His Spirit is the one who puts a song in a mouth that has only ever been used at that table for reciting.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the table, with the lamp still on. Not because the sentences are a mechanism and God is a clerk, since the clerk's job is exactly the one being handed back. Because you are in Christ, and He is the one who settled it, so the standing to speak over your own years came to you as a gift and was never earned by keeping an honest account of them. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the current in it. Speak, and leave the outcome with Him, because how He answers and when is His to decide and He may answer in His own way.

  1. Ledger under the lamp, you have been handed over tonight, and I am not your clerk any longer. His word says the redeemed of the Lord return with singing, and it never once says they return with an account to present at the gate. I am closing you and turning off this lamp.
  2. Sentence I keep passing on myself, get off my life, in the name of Jesus. I am the redeemed of the Lord and I am done bracing for a verdict that has already been spoken. Scripture says God is the one who justifies, and it asks who is left to bring a charge, and the answer in my own house is nobody.
  3. Lord, You restore the years that were eaten and You have never once asked me to explain them to You. Your word says the redeemed return with singing, and Your Spirit is the one who puts a song in a mouth that has only used this table for reciting. I am saying one year out loud and handing it to You, and then I am going up to bed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
