Years RedeemedPsalm 51:12

The Reunion Arithmetic

This message is for I am doing the arithmetic on the years between eighteen and thirty while everybody at this table says what they have been up to, and I cannot make a sentence out of mine.

The hall smells exactly the same. That is the first thing, and it is not a nice thing, it is an ambush. Parquet and radiators and floor wax and something underneath it that is just the smell of being fifteen.

They have put paper cloths on the trestle tables and a tea urn at the end and somebody has done a display of old photographs on a board by the double doors. Everyone keeps drifting over to it and coming back saying who they could not find.

She is at the third table with five people whose faces she knew before she knew their names. It is going round. It always goes round. Somebody starts, and then it goes clockwise, and everybody says what they have been up to.

The man on her left is on his second marriage and very cheerful about it and does something with logistics. The woman opposite went into nursing and then out of nursing and back in. There is a teacher. There is somebody's brother who was not even in their year and is telling a long story about a boat.

And she is doing the arithmetic.

Eighteen to thirty. That is twelve. Twelve years, and she can tell you where every single one of them went, which is somehow worse than not knowing. She can see them laid out end to end like the parquet blocks, and there is no sentence she can make out of them that will sound like an answer to the question that is coming round the table clockwise at the speed of about ninety seconds a person.

She has three versions ready. She has been building them in the car park since twenty past seven. One is vague and cheerful and will get a nod. One is a joke about not doing very much and will get a laugh and then a silence. One is honest and she is not going to use it.

The urn hisses. The teacher is finishing. Two to go.

Here is what she wants, and she has never once said it out loud to a living soul. She does not want anybody to say the years were not wasted. She knows what they were. She wants somebody to know the whole of it and not need her to explain any of it. She wants the question to come round and land and cost her nothing.

Her turn is next. She reaches for her cup and it is empty and she holds it anyway.

You know the shape of this and it is not about a school hall.

There is a stretch of your life you can account for exactly and can never say out loud. Not because you have forgotten. Because you remember. And every version of the sentence you have ever built comes out sounding either like a lie or like a confession, and you have got very good at steering conversations away from a set of dates.

The Arithmetic Is Not Wrong. It Is Just Not The Sum.

Nobody here is going to tell you the years were fine. That would be a lie, and a lie is a terrible thing to hand somebody who is holding an empty cup.

Your arithmetic is accurate. That is exactly why it hurts and exactly why it has such power over an evening. What is wrong with it is not the numbers. It is that you are the only one adding up, and you have been doing the sum on your own for so long that you have started to believe the total is a verdict.

You are not standing under a sentence, and there is no one waiting for you to justify the dates. I am not softening this for you. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the kindness of my tone, who carries that from a page into a school hall with a tea urn hissing in it.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.Psalm 51:12

Look at what that verse asks for and what it does not. It is a prayer out of the worst week of a man's life, a week he could account for exactly and never wanted to say out loud. He does not ask for the record to be deleted. He does not offer to make it up. He asks for the joy back.

And restore is a purchasing word, not a tidying word. It is what somebody does when they have the right to hand a thing back and they hand it back.

You have been met by God without a single question about what happened. His word says He does not deal with us according to what we have done, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land as air in the lungs rather than as theology you would have to defend at a table.

Restore Is About Years, Not About Excuses

Something has to be said plainly here, and it belongs in the middle of this and not in a footnote.

Not every one of those years was a choice. Some of them were, and you know which. But a person who was worn down, leaned on, groomed or frightened into a thing did not trade freely, and a pushed signature is not a signature. If there are years in your twelve where you said yes and the yes was not yours, they do not go in the column you have been putting them in. That is not a technicality. It is the truth about what happened to you, and nobody, including you, gets to file it under wasted.

And for the ones that were yours, plainly and squarely yours, here is what this site will not do. It will not ask you which they were. It will not list them back to you. It will not tell you what God was teaching you in them, because that is a way of making the years pay for themselves, and they are not being asked to pay for anything.

You have been let off the explanation, and the letting off was decided before you ever built your three versions in the car park. It is written that He removes our transgressions as far as the east is from the west, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a distance like that mean something in a room where the question is coming round clockwise.

The record stands. Every one of those twelve years happened and is still where it happened and is not being written out of your life. What has changed is the verdict, and the verdict was passed by the only one entitled to pass it, and He passed it in your favor while you were still building sentences.

You are held by the One who already knows the whole of it and is not asking you to say it well. Scripture calls Him the God who justifies, and it is the same Spirit who is doing right now, in your chest, what an honest answer at that table never could.

The breakthrough

So here is what happens now, and it is smaller and better than you think.

You are not going to be asked to tell anybody. Not the table, not a group, not a friend who would be kind about it. You are going to hand over a set of dates to the one person who already has the whole of it, and you are going to do it without a single word of explanation attached.

That is the part that will feel wrong, and it is the part that matters. Every time you have brought those years anywhere near God you have brought them with a covering letter. A reason. A context. A small apology tucked in at the end so He knows you know.

You are being received without the covering letter, and the reception is not conditional on how well you word it. It is written that He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse, and the Spirit is the one who makes faithful mean this evening rather than in principle.

Nothing you do adds anything to this. Not the years of quietly making up for it, not the good you have done since, not this evening's honesty. Those things may be real and they are not part of what settled this, because nothing was ever left open for you to join.

You have been given back the joy, and the giving back does not wait on the joy arriving first. His word says He restores, present tense, as something He does rather than something He is deciding about, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a restored thing feel like yours instead of like borrowed.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question going round that table, you are not my sentence. The word says God restores the joy of His salvation, and restore is a word about years, not about excuses. I am handing mine over tonight and I am not attaching a reason.
  2. Voice that does my arithmetic at night, be quiet in me. In the name of Jesus I put down the tally nobody else is adding, because the One who has the whole of it is not asking me to say it well. I am carrying a total that has already been taken off me.
  3. Jesus, You restore the joy and You do not read the years back to me. You are the one entitled to pass the verdict and You passed it in my favor, and I am saying the dates out loud to You tonight with nothing added.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
