The kitchen holds nine people and there are fourteen in it. Somebody has taped paper streamers along the top of the cupboards and one end has already come down and is hanging over the kettle and nobody is going to fix it. There is a cake with too much icing on it and a single candle because they could not find the number.
He is standing with his back against the fridge because that is the only piece of wall left. He has been in this house four times. He knows where the glasses are because he asked, last spring, and his daughter told him, and he has thought about that small ordinary exchange more than a man should think about anything.
They are singing. His daughter is holding the baby up so the baby can see the candle, and the baby is not interested in the candle and is instead staring, absolutely fixed, at the streamer hanging over the kettle, and the whole kitchen finds this the funniest thing that has ever happened.
He laughs too. He is standing right in it, laughing, and at the same time some quiet clerk in the back of his mind is doing the arithmetic he has been doing for eleven years now. Her first day of school. The year of the plaster cast. The recitals. The Christmas with the two coats. He is not going to tell you where he was. Neither am I. That is not the part that matters and it never was.
Then his daughter turns around with the baby on her hip, and the whole room shifts to let her through, and she says, here, hold him, and she puts this warm heavy sleepy child straight into his arms across the corner of the same table.
The same table. Not a metaphor. He is standing in the same kitchen in the same house, and the table is the one he was not at.
And his hands do the thing hands do, one under, one behind the head, without being told, because they remember even if he was not there for most of what they remember. The baby grabs a fistful of his shirt and holds on with the total unembarrassed confidence of somebody who has never once been let down.
He should be undone with gladness. Part of him is. And the other part is standing there thinking, she does not know what she is doing, she is handing this to a man who was not there, and if she thought about it properly for two minutes she would take him back.
Nobody in the room is thinking that. Nobody in this kitchen has thought that in years. He is the only person here who is still holding the trial, and he holds it every single time, and he has never once said so out loud, because how do you say it. They have forgiven you and you cannot make the forgiveness go anywhere. It arrives and it sits on the surface and underneath the arithmetic keeps running.
You know exactly the year you are still standing in. You do not have to name it to me.
Nobody can hand you back a year, and that was never the offer
Let me clear one thing out of the way, because it is what keeps people from receiving anything in this category. Redemption does not run the film backwards. The years you spent are spent. There is no version of this message where you get to be at the recital.
If that sentence lands hard, stay with me, because the next one is the whole point.
You are not being asked to get those years back. That is not resignation talking. It is written that God restores the years, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the tidiness of my phrasing, who keeps a man from turning that promise into a fantasy about time travel and lets it be the far stranger thing it actually is.
Restoration in Scripture never means reversal. It means the ruined thing is taken up and put to use by somebody with the right to do it, and what comes out the other side is not the old thing repaired. It is something with the ruin still visible in it, carrying weight again.
Which is why the baby in his arms is not a consolation prize. It is the actual thing. The same table, the same kitchen, the same man, and a life put into his hands in the exact place where he was absent.
You are holding something in the present tense that your arithmetic has no column for. Scripture says the Lord is near to all who call on Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes near mean this kitchen, this evening, this weight against your shirt, rather than a comfort filed away for later.
Remember not, and He is not pretending
Here is the prayer that this whole message stands on, and it is worth hearing what the man praying it is actually asking for.
Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions. According to Your mercy remember me, for Your goodness' sake, O Lord.Psalm 25:7
He does not ask God to forget. Forgetting is not on offer and he does not want it. He asks God not to remember them against him, and then he asks to be remembered on a completely different basis: mercy, and the goodness of God's own character.
That is two ledgers and one of them has been closed. The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of those sentences are true at once, and a message that gives you only the first one crushes you, and a message that gives you only the second one is lying to your face about your own life.
You have been remembered on a basis that has nothing to do with your record. His word says He remembers us according to His mercy for His goodness' sake, and it is the Spirit who takes that phrase, for His goodness' sake, and lodges it in a man who has spent a decade assuming he is remembered for exactly one thing.
And I want to say something else plainly here, because some of you are sitting in a category you were put into. Not everybody who spent their years spent them freely. Some of you were leaned on hard, and worn down over a long time, and pushed into a door by people who knew what they were doing. A pushed signature is not a signature. If somebody stood behind you with their hand over yours, that is not you signing, and the arithmetic you have been running was never yours to run in the first place.
You are not on trial in a room where nobody is prosecuting. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the same Spirit who wrote the word now is the one who will not let it be read as later.
Here is the specific thing I am putting back in your hands, and it is not a feeling about the past.
It is the years themselves. Not repaired, not explained, not turned into a lesson. I am not going to tell you what God was teaching you in them, because I do not know, and because a man who assigns a purpose to another man's wasted years has just handed him a heavier thing than he came in with.
Give them over as they are.
You are handing over years, not defending them. Scripture says come now and let us reason together, though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of your case, who carries a man through that sentence without letting him start explaining himself halfway.
That is what stops most people. Not unbelief. The instinct to attach a note. To hand God the years with a paragraph stapled to the front about the circumstances, so that He receives them already understood. He does not need the paragraph. He was there for all of it, He knows the length of it better than your clerk does, and He is holding out both hands.
You have been bought back along with your worst decade, and it did not cost you a thing. His word says in Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace, and the Spirit is the one who makes according to His grace mean what it says, which is that you are not a contributor to this.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the room you are in. The authority in them is not yours by nature. It is His, delegated to you in Christ, and the outcome is His too, however He answers.
- Years I was not at that table, you are not my sentence. Scripture says the Lord does not hold the sins of my youth against me, and He hands me a child across the very same table. The record stands and the verdict is changed.
- Thought that they were better off, you are a liar and you do not get the last word in this kitchen. The Lord remembers me according to His mercy and for the sake of His own goodness, and in the name of Jesus I put you out of my house tonight.
- Lord Jesus, You bought back the years I spent and You have never once read them back to me. Your word says remember not the sins of my youth, and Your Spirit is the one steadying my hands at a loud table. I am saying the dates out loud to You today, and then I am going back in for the cake.
