The old passport is open on the counter at the photo page, and the man in the photo is ten years younger than the man holding it, and they are looking at each other.
The queue is long, the way it is on a Saturday. A woman with a parcel the size of a suitcase. Two lads with a form they are filling in against the wall. A pushchair. He has the renewal form filled in and the new photos in the little envelope, and the old passport with the corner clipped, and the clerk behind the glass turns it toward herself to check the number, glances at the picture, glances at him, and says, kindly, the way people do: gosh, that's gone quick, hasn't it.
It has. And he could tell her exactly where it went. He would not, but he could. That is the part that sits in his chest in the queue: nobody took those years off him. There is no story in which somebody else is to blame. He spent them, and he knows how, and the arithmetic is quick and clean and he does it standing there, from the date on the old passport to today, the way he has done it a hundred times, and every time it comes out the same and every time a sentence comes with it.
The clerk stamps the form. The pushchair behind him squeaks forward. He puts the old passport in his inside pocket, next to his heart, which is a stupid place for it and the only pocket that closes.
You have an old photograph somewhere and you know the years between it and now, and you know how they went, and you have never once been able to put them down because you are certain that the putting down comes with a reading of the charges. So you carry them, in the pocket that closes, and you do the arithmetic in queues.
A man who said it out loud and was not charged
There is a picture in the book of Job that almost nobody reads, because it comes from Elihu, the young man who talks too long, and it is the picture I want to hand you today.
Elihu is describing what God does with a person who has gone down a long way by their own doing. And in the middle of it, he puts words in that person's mouth, and the words are not the ones you would expect.
He sings before men and says: I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.Job 33:27-28
Read what the man says. He does not say it was not his fault. He does not say the years were taken. He says, in front of people, I did this, I bent what was straight, and then he says the thing that should not be possible: and it was not repaid to me. He looked for the sentence and it was not there. Instead, somebody had bought his soul back from the pit he had walked into himself, and he was standing in the light.
That is redemption in one breath. He said what he did. It was not held against him. He was bought back.
You are looking at the one picture in Scripture of a man who admitted everything and was charged nothing, and you were always the person it was put there for. Job 33:27-28 is written into a long speech precisely so somebody in a queue would find it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old line stop being about a man in a book. And the buying back was not a fresh start that pretended the years never happened; he is still standing there saying I did this. The record stands and the verdict is changed.
You are that man in the queue, and it was not repaid to you either. I am not saying this from my own hopefulness about you; it is written in Job 33, in a mouth that admits everything, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a verse out of a long speech and sets it in a post office. He is the one who does the buying back. You are the one who was bought.
He does not read you the receipt
Here is the weight, and I want to name it plainly, because it is not the years themselves. You have carried the years a long time and you could carry them longer, and the Holy Spirit has watched every mile of it without once reading Scripture at you like a charge sheet.
The weight is the sentence you are sure comes with the handing over. You have imagined it in detail: you set the years down in front of God and He picks them up and goes through them, one by one, the way a man goes through a drawer looking for something, and He reads each one back to you, and only then, when the whole drawer has been gone through, does He say anything about redemption. So you have kept them in the pocket that closes, because the reading is worse than the carrying.
Now look again at Elihu's man. Who is doing the reading? He is. I sinned. I bent what was right. He names it himself, once, plainly, in front of people. And God's part is not the reading. God's part is: it was not repaid to me, and He redeemed my soul from the pit. God does not read the man his own years back to him. God buys them.
You have a Redeemer who does not read you the receipt, and the years are already in His hands and not on His desk. That is Scripture and not my softness; the man in Job 33 looked for the charge and found redemption instead, and the Spirit of God is the one who works that same discovery in a person, standing in a queue with an old passport against his chest. He is not going through the drawer. He bought the drawer.
What is bought back is not erased
I will not tidy your history away, because Scripture does not, and a site that pretended your years never happened would be telling you something false about your own life.
The man in Job 33 still says I sinned. After the redemption. In the light, with the Spirit of God on him. The years are on the record; the photograph is still ten years old; the arithmetic still comes out the same. What has changed is not the record. What has changed is whose the years are, and what is written over them. They were yours, spent, and now they are His, bought, and the verdict written over them is not the one you have been reading out to yourself in queues.
And notice what he does with his mouth once it is done. He sings before men. Not a confession under lights. A song, in company, that says plainly what happened and plainly what God did with it. The years did not disappear. They became the first verse.
You have a mouth that is meant for singing and not for arithmetic, and you were given it back with the years. Job 33:27-28 has the man sing before men rather than account to them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person from counting in a queue to saying out loud what God did with what they spent.
You are bought back with the years attached, and the years are His now, and you are not paying them off. That is not my line, it is what the word says redemption is: a person taken back, whole, history and all, by somebody with the right to do it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that ownership felt, in the pocket that closes, and He does not need you to make it up to anybody first. Nobody contributes to a price already paid. Not by carrying. Not by arithmetic.
You are still in the queue in your own head, and the old passport is still in the pocket that closes, and the arithmetic still comes out the same. I am not going to change the arithmetic. I am going to tell you who owns the answer.
You are redeemed, years and all, and it was not repaid to you, and the One who bought you back is not reading them back to you. That is Job 33:27-28 as it stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who lifts a verse off the page and puts it in your chest where the passport is. He did the buying. You do the handing. And the handing is smaller than you have feared for a very long time, because it comes with no reading attached.
The years are on the record. The verdict has changed. Say the years, once, and let go of the pocket.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, with the dates still in the air. The authority to hand over years is not something you earned by carrying them well; you are in Christ, and Christ is in you, and He is the Redeemer with the right to act, so the standing is His and it is yours to speak from. Job 33 is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying what you say; nothing here is a technique and nothing here is a payment. The mountain is not the years. It is the certainty that a sentence comes with the handing over, and Jesus said the mountain is spoken to and it moves. So speak to it, believing, and leave what He does with the years to Him. That is His to decide, in His own way, and none of it is a charge against you.
- Years between the two photographs, you were spent by me and you have been bought back by Him, and I am not paying you off. Job 33 has a man say plainly what he did and find it was not repaid to him, and God redeemed his soul from the pit.
- Arithmetic I keep doing on myself, get out of my head in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not going through the drawer, and the Redeemer bought the drawer whole, and He does not read a redeemed man his own receipt.
- Lord, You are the One who bought me back with the years attached, and I have said the dates and I am not explaining them. I thank You, because Your Spirit is putting a song where the arithmetic was, as it is written, and the record stands and the verdict is Yours, and I am standing in the light.
