Everybody Thanks Him for Stopping

The tide is a long way out and the fire is doing that thing where it settles and goes orange all through, and the whole bay smells of woodsmoke and salt and somebody's cooking.

It is the end of season gathering, the one everybody comes to. Trestle tables in the sand, mismatched chairs, a dog going round under the tables on business of its own. Children have taken over the flats and are conducting some enormous project out there with a spade. The light is doing the thing it does for about eleven minutes and everyone has gone slightly quiet about it.

He has been here two hours and he has had the conversation nine times.

It goes the same way each time and every version of it is kind. Somebody comes over with a plate, sits on the edge of the driftwood, puts a hand on his shoulder. Good to see you. Then a pause, and then the thing. Proud of you, mate. Three years now, is it. My sister asks after you. Honestly, we all say it, what you did was the hardest thing any of us has watched anybody do.

He says thank you. He means it. These people stood by him and some of them stood in front of him, and not one of them has ever thrown a word of it back at him, and there is a version of this evening in another life where none of them would be speaking to him at all. He is not ungrateful. He knows exactly what he has been given.

And underneath it, running quietly the whole evening, is a thing he has never said to a single person on this beach.

Every one of them, without exception, talks to him about what he stopped.

Nobody has ever asked him what he is starting.

Not once in three years. Not the ones who visited. Not the ones who drove. Not the man who sat in a car park with him for two hours one February. They ask how he is doing, and what they mean by doing is holding, and the answer they are hoping for is still. He is still doing well. He is still not doing the thing. And every single conversation, however warm, closes on the same full stop, and the full stop is behind him.

So he has ended up as a man whose entire public identity is an absence. He is the one who stopped. In this bay that is his name. And he cannot complain about it out loud without sounding like the most ungrateful person in the county, so he does not, and instead he stands at the edge of a fire he genuinely wants to be at, holding a plate, being congratulated for a hole in his own life.

You know that sentence. Perhaps nobody in your world ever knew enough to congratulate you. It might be quieter than this and entirely private, and it might be that you are the one who has never once asked yourself the forward question. But you know what it is to be summed up by what you came out of, and to have no idea at all what you are for.

The verse does not stop where everybody stops

There is a passage in Isaiah that people quote the front half of constantly and the back half of almost never, and the back half is the reason it was written.

The front half is what you would expect. Good news to the poor. Binding up the broken hearted. Liberty to captives. Opening the prison. All of it removal, all of it rescue, all of it about getting somebody out. That is the part everybody knows and it is the part your whole bay is celebrating tonight.

Then it turns.

To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord, for the display of his splendor.Isaiah 61:3

Read what happens in that sentence. It is not empty handed rescue. Something is given, in place of what went. A crown where the ashes were. Oil where the mourning was. A garment, which is a thing you put on and go out in. And then, at the end, a name, and the name is not a survivor's name. Oaks of righteousness. A planting of the Lord.

Planting is a forward word. It is the most forward word in the language of the land. Nobody plants a thing in order to congratulate it for having been uprooted. You plant because of what it is going to be standing there doing in thirty years, and everything about the act is aimed downstream.

You are a planting of the Lord, and you were put in the ground on purpose and facing forward. That is not my optimism talking. Isaiah 61:3 gives that exact name to the people God has just rescued, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a word about oaks and lays it over a man standing at a fire with a plate in his hand being thanked for the ninth time.

And notice the order in that verse, because it settles something. The crown, the oil and the garment are given. They are not earned by the person after their rescue as a way of showing they meant it. They arrive as part of the same act.

You have been given something to wear, and it came with the rescue and not after an inspection. The word says a garment of praise is put on in place of a spirit of despair, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets that off a page and into a man who has been going out in the same three year old sentence about himself.

The trap on the far side of the rescue

Now let me put my hand on the exact trap this site exists to close, because it is waiting for him and it is probably waiting for you.

The moment a man who has been bought out of something starts asking what he is for, there is an answer sitting right there, and it is the wrong one, and everybody around him will nod at it. The answer is: pay it back. Make it count. Go and warn the ones coming up behind you. Turn the worst thing you ever did into fuel and burn it for the rest of your life in useful service.

That is not purpose. That is the payment scheme wearing better clothes.

Hear this plainly. What God plants, He plants for His own delight and for the display of His splendor, and the verse says so in those words. Not for restitution. Not to balance anything. An oak is not standing on a hillside working off the fire that cleared the ground it grew in.

You are not paying anything back, and your calling is not a repayment plan. Scripture puts the whole crown and oil and garment on the side of what is given rather than what is owed, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a redeemed man from quietly turning his own purpose into a sentence he is serving.

And I will say the thing this whole site says, because it belongs here too. The record stands and the verdict is changed. Those three years are real years and what came before them is a real history, and nobody on that beach is wrong to be glad, and God is not proposing to pretend any of it away. What has changed is not the past. What has changed is that the sentence about you no longer ends where everybody's version of it ends.

You are being called by a forward name, and it is the one God actually uses for you. His word calls the rescued oaks of righteousness and a planting of His own hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a name like that arrive as a fact rather than as a compliment.
