Everybody Here Remembers 1998

This message is for the man in a small town where everybody remembers exactly what he did in 1998 and is kind about it to his face, which is the part he cannot carry

Saturday morning on a three block main street. The hardware store has its doors propped. Somebody has put folding tables on the sidewalk. The light is coming in low from the east end and the whole street is the color of a good apple.

A man walks up the left side with a list in his shirt pocket, and he is greeted seven times in two hundred yards, and every single greeting is kind.

That is the part.

The woman at the register asks after his mother by name. The man loading lumber lifts two fingers off the tailgate and grins at him. Somebody's boy nearly runs him down on a bicycle and shouts an apology over his shoulder and calls him by name. Nobody says a hard word. Nobody has said a hard word in a very long time.

And in twenty-six years nobody has forgotten a thing.

He can feel it in the shape of the kindness. It has a little extra in it. A half beat of consideration before the question about his mother, a fractional gentleness in the way the hardware man says take care now, and he knows exactly what that half beat is, because it has been in every conversation he has had on this street since 1998.

He is not being punished. He wants to be clear about that with himself, because it feels ungrateful to complain. These are good people. They have been good to him beyond anything he could have asked. He was not run out. He was not frozen out. He was folded back in, quietly and completely, and given work and a pew and a place at the table on holidays.

He is just being remembered.

And there is no way to talk about it. If he ever said out loud what he is carrying, every one of them would tell him truthfully that it is long past, that nobody thinks about it, that he should let it go. And they would mean it. And he would still know that the woman at the register was seven years old in 1998 and heard the whole thing at her kitchen table, and that it is now simply part of what a person here knows about the world, the way you know where the creek floods.

He gets his things. He crosses at the light. Two men outside the diner are laughing at something and one of them waves him over to hear it, and he goes, and it is funny, and he laughs too, standing in the gold light in the middle of a town that loves him and remembers.

You know this. I am not going to ask you what your year was. I am not going to require you to describe one thing that happened, to me or to anybody. But you know exactly what it is to be forgiven by people who have not forgotten, and to carry the remembering by yourself because everybody has been too kind to let you set it down.

What God Did Not Do

Most of what gets said about forgiveness at this point is a lie told with good intentions, so let us be exact.

God did not delete your history. The event happened. It happened at a particular hour on a particular day and it had effects in other people's lives, and Scripture is not in the business of pretending otherwise. If somebody has told you that God has forgotten it in the sense that the information is no longer present to Him, they were trying to comfort you with something that is not true, and you knew it was not true, which is why the comfort never held.

You are carrying a real history, and nothing in the word asks you to pretend the year did not happen. Scripture says God is not a man that He should lie, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes honest ground the only ground a man can actually stand on.

So look at what the Psalm does instead, because it is stranger and better than deletion.

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.Psalm 103:12

Sit with the measurement for a second. It would have been easy to write north and south, and it would have been wrong, because north and south have ends. Go far enough north and you reach the pole and start going south. There is a finish to it. A man could stand at the top and say, well, here is the boundary of how far it went.

East and west never meet and never turn into each other. Walk east your entire life and you are still walking east. It is not a long distance. It is a distance with no far end in it at all, and that is the point: He measured it in a direction rather than a length so that nobody could ever stand at the edge of it and look back over.

You have been separated from your transgression by a measurement that has no far side, and there is no place to stand and see it from. It is written that as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that geometry and lays it over one particular year in one particular town.

And read the verse once more for what is actually moved. Not you from the town. Not the town's memory from the town. Your transgressions, from you. The record of what happened stays exactly where it is in the world, and the thing itself is carried off you in a direction with no end. That is not tidying. That is surgery.

The Kindness Is Not the Verdict

Now here is the thing that has been quietly wearing this man out, and it is worth naming plainly, because it is not what he thinks it is.

He believes he is being carried by the town. Gently, generously, but carried. And under it is the assumption that he cannot stand on his own account, so the good people are covering for him, and the day the covering stops is the day the real state of things shows.

But the kindness on that street is not the verdict. The kindness is the weather. It is good weather, and it says something true about the people making it, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the ruling on the case. Their memory is accurate and their manner is generous and neither one is a judge.

You are standing under a verdict that was passed by the only court with jurisdiction, and no street in your town is holding it up for you. Scripture says it is God who justifies, and asks who is left to bring a charge, and it is the Holy Spirit who is at this moment putting that question over a hardware store on a Saturday.

That is why the record standing does not hurt the way you think it should. The record was never what condemned you. The verdict condemned you, and the verdict has been changed, and once that is done a record is only a record: a true account of things that occurred, sitting in the world, no longer carrying a sentence in it.

You have a true history and a changed verdict at the same time, and Christ is the reason both of those can be true in one man. He promised in His word that He would blot out our transgressions for His own sake, and the same Spirit who raised Him is the one who lets a man hold an accurate memory without being crushed by it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not that the town will change.

The town may remember it forever. Small places have long memories and that is not cruelty, it is just what a place with a shared kitchen table is like. Nothing here depends on that changing, and if you have been waiting for the year everybody finally forgets, you have been waiting on the wrong event and it was never coming.

What has already happened is the one that counts. The thing itself has been carried off you in a direction that does not turn back. That is done. It was done a long time before you walked up that street this morning, and it did not wait for the town to catch up, and it is not weaker because the woman at the register was seven years old and heard the whole thing.

You are not on probation in your own town, and there is no review pending that anybody has scheduled. Scripture says He has removed our transgressions from us, in the completed tense, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a finished thing feel finished in a man who has been waiting to be released for over two decades.

And you can stop reading the half beat. That is the real freedom in this, and it is very practical. You do not have to audit the pause before the question about your mother, or grade the gentleness in take care now. Let the kindness be kindness. Let people be as generous as they are actually being, and let their memory be their own business, because it is not the ruling and it never was.

You have been given the right to receive plain kindness plainly, and you owe nobody an ongoing performance of regret. It is written that if the Son sets you free you are free indeed, and it is His Spirit, not your management of a small town, who keeps a freed man free.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing if you can. The authority in them is not yours by nature and it is not mine; it is Christ's, delegated, and it is yours in Christ because He bought you and put it in writing. He may answer in His own way and in His own timing, and the outcome is His to decide and not ours. We are not making anything happen here. We are saying out loud what has already been settled.

  1. Nineteen ninety-eight, you are not my name and you do not get to introduce me. The Lord measured my transgressions away in a direction that has no far end, and that is the ruling on this town's main street. I am walking down it in the daylight.
  2. Belief that I am what they remember, get off my shoulders. I am a man whose transgression was carried east while the story stayed west, and Christ did the carrying with His own hands. In the name of Jesus, I am done auditing the kindness of good people.
  3. Lord, You measured it in directions instead of lengths, and east and west have never once met behind me. Your word says as far as the east is from the west, and Your Spirit is the one saying it over a small town on a Saturday morning. I am telling You what happened, and then I am saying out loud what You have said.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
