Not My Place to Get Involved

The phone is face down on the arm of the chair and it has been face down for two hours, which is a thing you only do to a phone that has stopped bringing you anything.

Sunday afternoon. The good room, because she still keeps a good room, and the radio is on low for company rather than for listening. A plate of biscuits on the coffee table that nobody has touched, put out at two o'clock out of pure habit, for nobody. The clock over the fire is a minute fast and has been a minute fast for eleven years and she has never adjusted it, because her mother never adjusted it.

She has a system. Before she rings anybody she works out exactly what she is going to ask for. Then she makes it smaller. Then she makes it smaller again, cutting it down and down until it is the sort of thing a person could say yes to on their way out of the door without it costing them their afternoon. And when it is finally small enough, she does not ring.

The aunt said it first, and said it in the hallway with her coat already on, and she said it kindly. I don't think it's my place to get involved, love.

The cousin said it on speakerphone from the car, with the indicator ticking underneath the words, and she said it kindly too. I would, only I'm not really the right person, am I.

The brother-in-law said it best, which is why it went in deepest. He said, I love you, and I'd only make it worse, and honestly it isn't my place.

None of them were lying. That is the part she cannot get round on a Sunday afternoon. Every single one of them was telling the truth about themselves, gently, in a doorway or a car or a kitchen, and every single truth arrived as a closed door, and the doors were all closed by nice people. There is nobody to be angry with. There is just a phone, face down, and a list of numbers in her head that she has stopped scrolling to, and a plate of biscuits going soft.

So she has arrived at the thing that happens after enough kind refusals. She has stopped asking anybody for anything at all. Not out of bitterness. Out of tidiness. It is simply less work to want nothing.

And you know that room. You have your own version of the phone and your own version of the list, and somewhere along the line you did the arithmetic on everybody who is near enough to your situation to do anything about it, and you came out the other side with a number, and the number was zero. You did not tell anybody that either.

Somebody with the right, and somebody willing

Here is what the refusals actually were, and I want to say it carefully, because you love these people.

Help needs two things standing in the same person at the same time. It needs somebody with the right to act, and it needs somebody willing to use it. Your aunt may have had the willingness and no right. Your cousin may have had the right and no room left in her life. And when the two keep landing in different people, nothing moves, and after a while you stop calling it a shortage of one or the other and start calling it a fact about you.

You have been carrying a shortage and reading it as a verdict, and it was never a verdict. Scripture says the Lord has taken up the cause of your soul, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the volume of a sentence, who carries that off a page and into a Sunday afternoon with the radio on low.

You have taken up my cause, O Lord; you have redeemed my life.Lamentations 3:58

That word, cause, is a legal word and it is meant to be. It means the case. The matter. The thing that has your name on it and needs somebody to stand up in the room and say, this one is mine, I am acting on it. God gave His people a whole law about it: when a person lost what they could not hold, the one near enough by blood to have the right came and bought it back, and the thing went home to the family it belonged to. He is called the redeemer, and the two halves of him are exactly the two halves that never landed in the same relative for you: near enough to have the right, and willing to use it.

You are not without a redeemer, and the one you have is not standing at a polite distance from your situation. It is written that He shared in flesh and blood, the same flesh and blood as the children, so that He would be near enough to act (Hebrews 2:14), and the Spirit of God is the one who makes near mean near rather than mean well.

He took the case nobody would take

Scripture is not squeamish about the relative who declines. There is a scene at a town gate where the man with the closer right is offered the redemption and works out what it would do to his own house, and he says no. He is not a villain in the story. He is simply somebody who counted the cost to himself and found it too high, and the writer lets him say it and lets him go, and the case moves on to the one who takes it.

Read that and then read your hallway again. Nobody in that hallway was a villain either. They counted what it would cost their own house and they were honest with you about the number, and the honesty is why it hurt.

You are holding a real history of kind refusals, and every one of them stands in the record, and none of them is the verdict on your case. His word says that where there is no one to intervene He brings salvation with His own arm (Isaiah 59:16), and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets you keep loving your family and stop treating their limits as a ruling about your worth.

Because that is what quietly happened in you. Somewhere between the aunt and the brother-in-law, the shape of the refusals turned into a sentence about the kind of person you must be. Not their sentence. Yours, passed on yourself, in a good room, on a Sunday.

The record stands. Every one of those conversations happened exactly as you remember it. The verdict has changed, and the verdict was never theirs to hand down.

You have a Redeemer who took the case at the gate that nobody else would take, and He did not weigh what it would do to His own house first. Scripture says the Son of Man came to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), and the same Spirit who moved on the prophet who wrote about a cause being taken up is moving on that sentence right now.

And here is the specific thing this message is putting back in your hands. Not help in general. Not a better family. It is your cause. The matter with your name on it that you long ago decided was nobody's business, taken up by Somebody with standing, and moved from the pile marked no one to the pile marked mine.

You have been given back the right to ask, and asking is not a debt you take on. It is written that we come with confidence to the throne of grace to find help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who turns confidence from a word into a thing a woman can actually do with her own mouth on a Sunday.
