Mile Markers

He pulls off at the gravel apron above the valley because the coffee is gone and the sun is not up yet, and he has made this stop so many times that the truck practically signals for it.

Gray light. The ridge line just starting to separate itself from the sky. A guardrail with the paint gone off the top rail from thirty years of forearms. Somewhere down in the trees a creek he has never seen and has heard a thousand times.

He gets out. He stands at the rail. And without deciding to, the way a man breathes, he starts counting.

He is not counting miles. He is counting years. He has done it so long that the years have taken the shape of mile markers to him: little green posts standing out of the weeds at regular intervals, each one with a number on it, each one telling him exactly how far he has come and exactly what road he is on.

And here is what puts the iron in it, the thing he has never once said to another human being. He picked this road.

Nobody drove him out here. There was no ambush, no betrayal, no accident he can lay it on. He can name every exit where he could have turned and did not, and he can tell you what he was thinking at the time, and the worst part is that at the time it made a kind of sense. There is nobody to blame for the route. He has looked. He has gone up and down that road in his mind at four in the morning for years, hunting for one other person he could put it on, and every time he arrives back at the same driver's seat with the same man in it.

So he does the only thing that seems fair. He counts. He totals it up. He passes sentence on himself again, quietly, in the dark, at a pull off, with a cold thermos in his hand, and then he gets back in and drives on to work and is decent to everybody he meets all day.

Behind him the sun clears the ridge and lays gold all down the valley he has been standing above, and he does not turn around for it, because a man in the middle of an accounting does not stop to look at the light.

You know this. I am not going to ask you where you turned, and I am not going to guess, and I will not be listing anything back to you. But you know exactly what it is to be the only name on the list, and to have run out of anybody to be angry at except the man in the mirror, who has already been sentenced and is serving.

The Counting Is Not Repentance

I want to say something to you plainly, because it took me a long time to learn it and I learned it standing in the ruins of something I had built myself.

The counting is not repentance. It feels like it. It has the weight of it, the seriousness of it, the sting. But repentance turns and walks. Counting stays at the rail. A man can total his years every morning for a decade and never once have turned around, and the counting will keep telling him he is doing something about it.

You are not under a sentence, and the case you keep re-opening at four in the morning has already been closed by somebody with the authority to close it. Scripture says the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of that idea, who carries a finished verdict off a page and into a truck cab at dawn.

For the Lord has redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of one stronger than he.Jeremiah 31:11

Look at who that verse is about. Jacob. Not a man who was carried off innocent. Jacob is the one in the whole book who most obviously arranged his own troubles, who schemed his way into most of what happened to him, who spent twenty years in a country he ran to because of what he had done. If ever there was a man with nobody to blame for the route, it was that one.

And the word does not say the Lord excused Jacob. It does not say the Lord explained Jacob, or found the good in Jacob's decisions, or drew a lesson out of the twenty years. It says redeemed. Somebody with the right came and bought him back out of a hand stronger than his own.

You have been bought out of a hand stronger than yours, and that is exactly the hand your own choices delivered you into. It is written that He ransomed him from one stronger than he, and His Spirit is the one who makes that ancient sentence sound like it has your name in it, because it does.

And I want to say one more thing here and then leave it, because it is the sort of thing a man needs to hear once and then be left alone with. If somebody had a hand on yours when a page got signed, that was never your signing. A pushed signature is not a signature. Some of what a man counts as his own route was chosen for him by people who knew exactly what they were doing, and the God who redeems is not confused about which was which even when you are.

He Never Asks for the Route

Now here is the part that undoes the counting, and it is not comfort, it is legal.

When redemption happens, nobody asks the redeemed man to account for how he got there. That is not a kindness the law adds at the end. It is the structure of the thing. The one with the right walks up and acts, and the case is settled on the strength of who he is, not on the strength of an explanation from the one being redeemed.

Which means that the speech you have been preparing your whole adult life is not required. You have been holding your years back from God because you assumed that handing them over meant going through them, one exit at a time, and justifying or confessing every single turn. You have not been unwilling. You have been unable to face the paperwork.

There is no paperwork.

You are being handed a settlement you did not negotiate, and the terms do not include a full account of the route. The word says He remembers our sins no more, which is a decision He has made and not a fact He has forgotten, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a man believe that about his own particular years.

And the record still stands. I am not going to lie to you and say the road is gone. Those mile markers are real. That was the route, and He is not asking you to pretend otherwise. The record stands and the verdict is changed, and if you have never heard those two things in the same breath, hear them now, because holding only the first one is what has kept you at the rail in the dark.

You are holding a true history and a changed verdict in the same hands, and nothing in Scripture asks you to put either one down. He promised in His word to restore the years, and the same Spirit who raised Christ is the one who does the restoring, which is not the same as pretending the years were never spent.
