The Row That Was Never Reserved

This message is for the woman who cleans the church every Saturday and has never once sat down on a Sunday without first checking that the row was not being kept for somebody else

The building is empty and it smells of lemon polish and cold radiators. Ten past nine on a Saturday night, and she is down on one knee at the end of the fourth row, working a scuff off a chair leg with a cloth she has folded four times so a clean side keeps coming round. She is humming. She always hums when there is nobody in the room to hear her do it.

She knows this place better than the man who preaches in it. She knows the chair in row six that ticks when somebody shifts their weight, and the radiator under the window that knocks twice at half past and then settles down like a dog. She knows there is a crayon that has lived under the piano since the Christmas the children did the nativity, and she leaves it there now, deliberately, because it makes her laugh every single week. She squares the hymn books. She carries the flowers out to the kitchen sink so they hold another seven days. She sets the heating low for the morning, locks the side door, and goes home with polish on her sleeve.

Sunday. She comes early, because she has the keys. She unlocks, puts the lights on, tips fresh water into the flowers, and then she goes back out to the porch and stands there in her coat with her breath showing, because walking in first feels like helping herself to something.

The room fills. She waits until the second song is well under way before she comes in, and she stands at the back with her hands folded and sings every word from memory, and she does not sit down.

Then, when nobody is looking at the back of the room, she does the thing she has done for eleven years. She runs her eye along the last row. A coat over a chair back. A bag on a seat. A folded bulletin laid flat. A Bible face down, keeping a place. Anything that says somebody is coming and this one is not free. Only when she has read the whole row and found nothing does she sit, right on the end, nearest the door, purse on her knees, coat still on.

She has never once sat down in that building without checking first.

And nobody has ever put a coat on that chair. Not once, in eleven years. There has never been anybody coming. The row has never been reserved.

You know this. Maybe not the chairs. But you know the checking. You know what it is to be in a room you have every right to be in and to stand at the edge of it reading the furniture for a sign that you are in somebody else's place. You know what it is to be useful in a house and never quite believe you are wanted in it.

The song they sing up there names how you got in

There is a song in heaven and we have the words to it. It is sung in front of the throne by creatures and elders who have every reason to sing about glory, and they do not sing about glory. They sing about a buying.

You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by your blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.Revelation 5:9

Read what that sentence does. It does not say redeemed us out of trouble and left us on the pavement outside with our coat on. It says redeemed us to God. Bought and brought home. Bought and named. The word underneath it is the word for a person taken out of a holding place by somebody with the right to take them, and walked through a door into a household that has a name over it.

You are bought outright, and you were never here on loan. That is not my opinion about your Sundays. Scripture says you were bought with a price and you are not your own, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the force of a sentence on a page, who carries that off the page and into a room with a back row in it.

Now look at the last clause of the song, because it is the one nobody reads out. Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Every voice in that room arrived from somewhere else. Not one of them is native to the place they are standing in. Not one of them got in by being from around here, by having served the longest, by knowing where the crayon is. Heaven's own anthem says out loud how the whole room got in, and it names one way, and it is the same way for every last one of them.

You have a place in that room by exactly the same title as every other person standing in it. It is written that we were all bought by the one blood and brought into the one household, and the same Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are God's own and not God's help.

Tolerated and owned are two different words

Here is the quiet ache under the checking, and I want to say it kindly, because it is not a small thing. A useful person is allowed to stay. And being useful is a real love. Her hands on those chair legs on a Saturday night are worship, and nobody is taking that away from her, least of all me.

But usefulness is a reason. And a reason can be looked at again. A reason can be replaced by a younger reason with a better vacuum. So a woman who is in a house on the strength of a reason will always be reading the furniture, because a person who is there for a reason can be there for the last time and never be told.

Owned is not a reason. Owned is a fact somebody else established, in an act that is finished, without asking you to contribute to it or keep it topped up.

You are owned by God, and being owned is not the same as being tolerated for what you are good at. His word says that you are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as safety rather than as ownership by a hard man.

And I am not going to tidy your history away in order to say it. You remember exactly why you started standing at the back. You could name the year. Something happened, or something was said, or something was signed away, and you have carried the sense ever since that you are here on somebody's goodwill and goodwill has a limit. God does not pretend that away. The record stands. The verdict is changed. Those two sentences live in the same breath in this house, and any message that drops one of them has lied to you about your own life.

You have been brought in, not let in. Scripture says he has made us accepted in the Beloved, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that word accepted and lays it down over eleven years of standing at the back until the standing stops making sense.

You are wanted before you are useful, and the wanting is not under review. The word says that we love him because he first loved us, so the wanting was already in motion before you had a single thing to offer, and the same Spirit who moved first is the one holding you now.

The breakthrough

I am not going to ask you to feel different about yourself. Feelings are the last thing in the building to hear the news, and they usually hear it from the back row.

I am going to name one thing instead, because this message is about one thing and not about redemption in general. The thing is the seat. Not your worth in the abstract, not your calling, not your service record. The chair. The place in the room that you have never once occupied without first reading the furniture for permission.

You are holding a seat that was bought for you before you walked through the door. Scripture says he has raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the word sit out of a verse and puts it into your knees.

Nobody is coming for that chair. There is no coat. There never was a coat. Eleven years of checking, and the row was never reserved.

And you owe nothing for it. Not a thing. Keep your Saturdays if you love them, because that polish is love and love is not a debt, and I would never take a woman's worship off her. But take the Saturdays as a daughter of the house, not as somebody keeping her welcome topped up.

You are free of the checking, and nothing you do on a Saturday was ever holding this open. The word says that where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin, and the same Spirit who finished it in you is not asking you to add to it with a cloth in your hand.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into anything here. An ambassador does not invent the message, he carries what the King has already said, and what the King has said about you is written down where anybody can go and check it. So speak these out loud, sitting down if you can, and leave the outcome with him, however he answers and whenever he moves.

  1. Back row, you are a seat and not a sentence, and I am done checking you for somebody else's coat. Scripture says I was bought for God out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, so the room I am sitting in was settled before I ever walked into it. In the name of Jesus, I sit down.
  2. Suspicion that I am kept for my usefulness, you are finished in this house, and you do not get to hold my coat one more Sunday. His word says I am not my own, I was bought with a price, and the Holy Spirit calls me a daughter and not a service. I am wanted here, and the wanting came first.
  3. Jesus, You bought me for God with Your own blood and You did not buy me for the porch. Your word says You have seated me together with Christ, and Your Spirit is the one walking me down the row this morning. I am taking the seat You bought, and I am taking it in Your name.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
