The box of spare folders lives under the trestle table by the urn, and every Thursday at ten to seven she takes one out of it, sings from it for two hours, and puts it back.
There are forty-odd people in the hall by the time the conductor claps for quiet. The tenors are late, as tenors are. The folding chairs are set out in the curved rows the caretaker never quite gets even. And every folder on every lap has a name on the spine in marker, some of them so old the marker has gone gray, some with two names because a folder got passed down, and hers has a name on it too. It is not her name. It is somebody else's, crossed out with one line, from whoever had it before it went into the spare box.
She has sung alto in this choir for nine years. Nine. She has done the Christmas concerts and the wedding they did as a favor and the funeral of the old bass everybody loved. She knows the second alto line to most of the folder without looking. She is, by any measure the choir would recognize, one of them.
And she still takes a spare from the box, because a spare can be put back.
If you asked her about it she would say she never got round to it, and that would be true and it would not be the reason. The reason is a thing she has never said to anyone, and it is this: she has lived her whole life feeling that she is somewhere on loan. That every seat she has ever sat in is one she has been allowed to sit in for now, and that there is a person somewhere, she could not tell you who, holding a piece of paper with her name and a due date on it, and they will come one morning and call it in. So she does not write on the spine. She does not unpack completely. She keeps every arrangement light enough to leave.
You know that folder. Maybe for you it is a desk you have never put a photograph on, or a church you have belonged to for a decade and still describe as the one you go to, or a friendship you keep half a step back from. You are good in the room. You are useful in the room. And underneath it there is a quiet ongoing calculation about how you would manage when the loan is called in, because you have never once been sure that you were bought rather than borrowed.
What redemption actually is, in one sentence
I keep books for a living, in the sense that stewardship is my calling, and I want to give you the plainest definition of the word this site is named for, because the word has been made to sound like incense and it is actually a word from a market.
To redeem is to buy back. Somebody with the right to act paid what was owed and took the person home. That is the whole of it. And the reason it answers your folder is that a thing which has been bought is not a thing on loan.
He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession.Titus 2:14
Look at the last words. A people for His own possession. Not a people on secondment. Not a people He is putting up for now. Possession is a word with an edge, and the edge is the point: what is possessed is not borrowed, and there is no due date on it because there is no lender.
You are one of the people that sentence is naming, and you were made His own possession before you ever sat down in that row. That is what Titus 2:14 settles in writing, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the force of my saying it, who takes a word out of a market and makes it true about a folder with somebody else's name on the spine.
And look at what the price was, because this is where the fear lives, and I am going to be exact with you. Peter says you were ransomed from the empty way of life handed down to you, not with perishable things such as silver or gold (1 Peter 1:18). Not with silver or gold. So hear this clearly, because a person who feels on loan is always privately doing arithmetic: nothing about the buying back of you was ever denominated in anything you could hold, or earn, or pay back. There is no sum. There is no figure. You are held by a price that leaves no balance, and you were never entered on anybody's books as a debt. That is written rather than guessed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it into the private arithmetic you have been doing since you were young. Christ gave Himself, which is not a currency, and it means the ledger you have been afraid of, the one with your name and a due date, was never opened, because the price was of a kind that produces no balance.
Now hear this over yourself. You are a possession of God, purchased outright, and the buying is finished. That is not my encouragement; it is written in Titus, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence from a letter to a man on Crete and puts it into a woman in the alto row so that it stops being doctrine and starts being hers. You are not here on loan. There is nobody holding a paper.
Why the feeling came, and why it does not get the last word
I am not going to ask you where the feeling came from. This is a site that does not ask what you sold or spent, and it is not going to ask what taught you to keep the bag half packed either. Some readers here spent something of themselves years ago and have been living as tenants of their own lives ever since. Some were simply never told they could stay. It does not matter tonight which of those is yours. What matters is that the feeling is a report about your history, and redemption is a change to your verdict, and those are different things.
That distinction is the honesty of this whole site, so let me be plain about it. The record stands. Whatever the years hold, they happened, and God does not pretend them away and neither will I.
You are holding a history that stands and a verdict that has changed, and you were never asked to pick one of the two. Scripture says you are not your own, for you were bought with a price, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps both halves of that true in the same person on the same evening. But the verdict over those years, and over you, has been changed by a price you did not pay. Paul says it in one line: you are not your own, for you were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Not your own. That is the same word as Titus, from the other side. You do not belong to yourself, which is the only reason you can stop being your own landlord.
You have been bought and the buying is done. That is Scripture, and the Spirit is the one who is described as the seal on the buying, the mark that says this one has gone through and is not coming back onto the market; Paul writes it to the Ephesians, and he writes it about you. A seal is not put on a rental.
Here is what has happened while you have been reading. The person you were afraid of, the one holding the paper with your name and the date, has been looked for, and the reason you could never say who they were is that they do not exist. Nobody holds a loan on a thing that was bought. The paper you have been bracing for was never drawn up, because Scripture says the price was not of a kind that leaves paper, and the Spirit has been the seal on you the whole time you were living lightly, ready to leave.
You are owned outright tonight, and you were owned outright through all nine of the years you spent being careful. That is written in Titus 2:14 and it was true on every one of those Thursdays, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a settled fact land in the chest of the person it is actually about.
You have been owned for nine years and living like a guest, and tonight the folder comes out of the box for the last time. You have not been tolerated. Scripture says you were bought with a price and are not your own, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on that buying rather than a receipt you have to keep producing at the door. Whatever else in your life still needs sorting, and there may be plenty, the standing is settled, and it was settled by somebody else. If the loan feeling has become something heavier than a feeling tonight, tell one real person before you sleep, and let them sit with you in it; but the buying back does not wait for the feeling to lift.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your name where you can see it. The standing to say them is not yours by nature; it is yours because you belong to Christ, and belonging is the very thing being declared, so the ground and the words are the same thing. Scripture is the deed, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on it, and neither one is a document you drew up. Speak to the spare folder, then to the expectation that has been reading you a due date, then to God. Whatever He does with the seat and the years ahead is His to decide, however He answers, and the buying is still finished.
- Spare folder with somebody else's name crossed out, you were never the truth about me. Titus says Christ gave Himself to make a people His own possession, and a possession is not on loan.
- Expectation that it gets called in, you have no date to work with, because the buying was finished before I ever sang a note. Scripture says through Peter that the price was never silver or gold, so there is no ledger with my name on it for anybody to present, and I say that in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You paid and I am Yours, in that order, and I am saying it out loud once with my name on the spine. Nothing about me is on loan, and Your Spirit is the seal that says the buying went through.
Titus 2:14
