The Box Room in Her Own House

This message is for the woman who has slept nine years in the box room of a house her own name is on and has never put a single picture on the wall, because she has never believed the house was hers to mark

Saturday morning, and the kettle downstairs is going before anybody has said good morning to anybody. Cora wakes up in the box room at the back, the small one over the porch, the one with the sloped ceiling you have to duck under to reach the window. A single bed. A lamp balanced on a stack of books, because there is no surface to stand a lamp on. Her coat on a hook behind the door, because there is nowhere else for a coat to go.

The big bedroom at the front has been empty nine years. Not empty exactly. There are boxes in it, and a bicycle nobody rides, and a curtain rail leaning against the radiator that she has been meaning to put up since the second summer.

She goes down in her socks. She is careful with the cupboard door, because the hinge has been loose since she came and she has never fixed it, and she knows why she has never fixed it. You fix a hinge in a house you are going to be in.

The walls are the shade they were the day she arrived. Beige. The color somebody picks on behalf of a person they have not met. Over the fireplace there is one nail, left from somebody else's mirror, and nothing has hung on it since.

She has pictures. They are upstairs in the front room in a box, wrapped in a tea towel so the glass does not chip: her grandmother squinting into the wind on a pier, a print of a wheat field she has loved since she was nineteen, a photograph of four women laughing so hard that two of them are half out of the frame. She takes them out sometimes. She lays them on the floor and looks at them. She wraps them up again.

Because a picture on a wall means a hole in the wall. And a hole in a wall is a mark. And you only make a mark in a place when you believe you are going to be there long enough to look at it.

Her name is the name on this house. It is on every letter that comes through the door. She says it out loud in the hallway sometimes, the way you would read out a name belonging to a stranger.

The kettle clicks off. She carries her tea back up the stairs, past the good room, into the small one, and sits on the edge of the single bed with the mug on her knee, under the sloped ceiling, in a house that is hers.

You know the room I am talking about. It is not always a box room. Sometimes it is a job you have done eleven years and still describe as temporary. Sometimes it is a church you have sat in for a decade, at the back, near the door, in case. Sometimes it is a friendship, a family, a whole life you are living at the edge of like a guest who was asked to stay on and never got a second invitation.

You have kept the bag half packed in your head. You have never once put anything on the wall.

Nobody is coming to call this in

Paul is on a beach at Miletus, saying goodbye to men he will not see again, and he does not send them away with a feeling. He hands them a fact about who they are looking after.

Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He bought with His own blood.Acts 20:28

Read it slowly. He did not adopt a flock He found wandering. He did not agree to look after somebody else's animals. He came with His own blood and He bought them, and the buying is finished, and the flock went home with the one who paid.

You are not here on loan, and there is no notice anybody can serve on you. That is not my sentence laid over your life. Acts 20:28 says the flock is the one He bought with His own blood, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the weight of the words, who carries that off a page and into a small back bedroom on a Saturday morning.

Understand what buying meant to the people who first heard this. It was not a mood and it was not a gesture. When somebody with the right to act paid what was owed, the person did not stay where they had been standing. They were taken home. Whoever had held them lost their claim in the same hour. Nobody came back later with a better argument.

That is the word Paul reaches for when he wants those elders to understand what they are handling. Not borrowed. Not fostered. Not tolerated on somebody's goodwill until the goodwill runs out. Bought, with His own, by a God who does not do things halfway and does not keep a receipt to hold over anybody.

And a flock is never an idea. A flock is this one, and that one, and the one at the back near the door with her coat still on.

You have a place at the front of the house and not at the edge of it. His word says He bought the church of God with His own blood, and His Spirit is the one who turns that from a doctrine you agree with into a floorboard you can stand on. Nobody who paid like that intends you to sleep under a sloped ceiling with your things in a bag.

What He does not do is pretend

Here is where many of us get quietly lost. We hear that we are His, and somewhere underneath we assume it means the last nine years are being tidied away, and we know they cannot be, because we were there.

He does not tidy them away. That is not what this is.

The record stands. Every year of it, exactly as it happened, exactly as you remember it in the hallway at seven in the morning. God does not ask you to agree to a version of your own life that you know is not true, and He never once tells you that it did not happen. What He does is stranger and far better than pretending. He changes the verdict. Say it in one sentence and hold both halves at once: the record stands and the verdict is changed. The history keeps every one of its details and stops being the thing that decides who you are.

You are owned outright, and the years you spent at the edge of the room are not being held against you. Scripture says He bought the church with His own blood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that finished thing and puts it under your feet where you are actually standing. The nine years are still nine years. They are simply no longer the ruling.

That is why the beige walls matter more than they look like they matter. A person who believes she is being tolerated keeps everything reversible. She does not fix hinges. She does not paint. She does not drive a nail through plaster, because a nail says something out loud about how long she intends to be here, and she has never felt entitled to say it.

You have been given the run of the whole house, and not one room of it is on trial. The word says you were bought with a price and you are not your own, and the same Spirit who makes a person cry out to God as Father is the one who makes a house stop feeling like somebody else's.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a technique.

Stop asking whether you are allowed to be here. That question was closed at a cost you cannot see the whole of, by somebody with the right to close it, and it has been closed the entire time you were creeping down the back stairs of your own life.

You are His, and He did not buy you in order to keep you near the door. His word says the flock is the one He bought with His own blood, and it is His Spirit, not a good mood or a strong feeling, who makes that land in the body of a woman who has spent nine years being a guest in her own hallway.

You do not have to earn the front room. You cannot. There is nothing for you to add and nothing for you to work off, and every attempt to contribute something to a finished thing is a quiet way of saying you did not quite believe it was finished. Faith here is not a payment. It is an open hand.

You are standing in a house that has already been settled, and the settling did not depend on you. It is written that He bought the church of God with His own blood, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that sentence into the room you are actually sitting in, on the day you are actually having.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own room, in your own voice. The authority is not yours by nature and it is not mine to hand out. It is Christ's, and what He has spoken is yours in Christ because He bought you with His own blood, and you are an ambassador here, saying what the King has already said rather than asking Him to consider it. He may answer in His own way and at His own pace, and the timing is His to decide, never a mark against you.

  1. Nail over the fireplace, you are not a warning and you are not a countdown. In the name of Jesus you are a hook, and my grandmother's face is going on you before this day is over. The One who bought me with His own blood has already settled who sleeps in the front room.
  2. Voice that says I am tolerated, you have no standing in this house. I am a woman bought outright and brought home, and the years I spent near the door are not the ruling over me. Scripture calls me His own, and His own is not a phrase anybody uses about a lodger.
  3. Lord Jesus, You bought me with Your own blood, and You did not buy me to keep me at the edge of the room. Your word says the flock is Yours, and Your Spirit is the one making that true in my body this morning. I am taking the pictures out of the box, and I am hanging them where I can see them from the doorway.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
