The List Before the Prayer

The chair has a worn place on the right arm where her hand goes, and the blanket lives folded over the back of it, and the mug goes on the sill because there is no table, and at ten to six the sky over the roofs is the color of the inside of a shell.

This is her hour. It has been her hour for nineteen years. The boiler comes on at six with a small knock in the pipe under the window, and by then she is usually well into it.

And every single morning, before anything else, she reads God the list.

Not from paper. She would be horrified if you called it a list, and if you asked her what she was doing she would say she was settling herself, and that would be sincere and it would not be the whole thing. What actually happens is this. She sits down. She puts her hand on the worn arm. And she goes through it: the two lifts to the hospital appointments, the Tuesday at the hall, the pot of soup left on a step, the phone call she made that she did not want to make, the thing she did not say on Sunday when she badly wanted to say it.

It takes about ninety seconds. It is always in roughly the same order. And only after it does she start.

She has never examined this, because it does not feel like anything. It feels like getting your coat off before you sit down.

But here is what she does notice, on the bad weeks, and it is the part that has begun to unsettle her. When the week has been thin, when she has been unwell or nothing came up or she simply did not manage anything, she does not pray at all. She does not decide not to. She sits in the chair and her mind slides off it and she puts the radio on at ten past six and tells herself she will do it later, and she does not do it later.

Last month her granddaughter stayed over. Eight years old, up ridiculously early, and she came down in a blanket of her own and sat on the floor by the chair with her back against it, and she said: morning, God. And then went straight on to a thing about a lizard she wants.

And her grandmother sat there in the shell colored light with her hand on the worn arm and could not do it. Could not simply open her mouth and begin. And she has thought about that most mornings since.

You know that ninety seconds. Maybe yours is not spoken. Maybe it is the mental audit you run in the car outside church, or the reason you cannot bring yourself to ask Him for anything in a week where you have let people down, or the fact that you are far more comfortable praying for other people than in your own name. Somewhere along the line you started paying at a door, and nobody ever told you the door was open, and you have been so quiet and so consistent about it that not one person in your life has ever seen you do it.

Here is the sentence, and I want you to notice that Paul writes it as a flat statement of fact and not as an encouragement.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.Titus 3:5

Works of righteousness which we have done. That is not a description of bad things dressed up. It is a description of genuinely good works, actually done, by real people, and Paul names them and then says: not by those.

He is not saying they did not happen. He is not saying they were worthless. He is saying they are not the mechanism. They are in the wrong position in the sentence, and he moves them, and what goes into the position they were occupying is His mercy.

You were saved according to His mercy and not according to a week. That is not my softening of the verse to make you feel better. Titus 3:5 says not by works of righteousness which we have done, and it is the Holy Spirit, named in that very verse, who takes a line written to a man on an island and carries it into a chair by a window at ten to six.

Now look at what the ninety seconds is doing, and be gentle with yourself while you look, because you did not build it on purpose. It is a character reference, read out at a door before you go through, in case the door is the kind that checks. And it has one feature that gives it away completely: on the weeks when the reference is thin, you do not go through the door at all.

That is not devotion. Devotion does not have a threshold under which it stops working. That is an entry procedure, run in the dark for nineteen years, and it has quietly made your prayer life conditional on your output.

You are already through the door, and you were through it before the first lift to the first appointment. His word says He saved us according to His mercy, in the completed tense, and the Spirit is the one who makes that arrive as relief instead of as a doctrine you already knew.

Remove the payment, not the life

Now I have to be careful with you, because there is a version of this teaching that does real damage, and I have watched it do it.

The careless version says: your works are nothing, stop. And a woman who hears that either ignores it, because she can see with her own eyes that the soup mattered, or she believes it and something goes out of her, and six months later nobody has been to that step with a pot of anything and she is not one inch freer.

So let me be exact. The lifts are real. The Tuesday is real. The phone call you did not want to make was one of the truest things you did all year, and Scripture is not embarrassed about good works anywhere. What has to go is not the work. It is the position of the work. It stops being what you present at the door and goes back to being what comes out of a person who is already inside.

Nothing about your life needs to shrink. One thing about your morning needs to move.

You are not being asked to put down anything good, and you are being asked to stop presenting it. It is written that we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which puts the works after the making and never before it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps that from turning into a reason to do less.

And here is the thing this whole site says in one breath, and it belongs here as much as anywhere. The record stands and the verdict is changed. Whatever it is you have been quietly making up for, and I am not going to ask and I am not going to guess, it happened. God does not tidy a life away, and He has not asked you to pretend. What He has done is settle the verdict, and the settling is finished, and the ninety seconds every morning is a payment being offered on a thing that has no balance left on it.

You have been offering a contribution toward something that was closed before you sat down in that chair. Scripture says He saved us according to His mercy, which is exactly the kind of word that admits no contribution, and the same Spirit named in Titus 3:5 as the one doing the renewing is the one who has been trying to get you past the first ninety seconds for years.
