She Cannot Say No

This message is for the woman who volunteers for every single thing at church and cannot say no to any of it, because of one year she believes she is still paying for

Twenty past ten, and the church kitchen has that particular quiet it gets when the hall on the other side of the door has emptied and nobody has turned the big lights off yet.

Ellis is doing the urns. There are two, and the second one is the one with the tap that drips, and she is the person who knows to put the tray under it. She is always the person who knows.

Behind her on the counter there are four trays of cups, a tub of teaspoons in cold water, and somebody's cardigan. On the shelf by the window is the tin she brought, empty now, with a note in it in her own writing saying whose tin it is, because the last three times a tin went home with somebody else.

Her feet hurt in a specific place.

At half past eight, in the middle of the evening, a woman she likes came into the kitchen and started a sentence. "We are looking for somebody to take on the second Sunday, and I know you already do the." And Ellis said yes before the woman got to the verb. She heard herself do it. There was a moment, right at the front of the yes, where she could feel her own mouth deciding, and it was not a decision, it was more like a door that opens outward whether or not you push it.

She has never turned anything down. Not once, in eleven years. Not the flowers, not the lifts, not the deep clean, not the funeral teas, not the two years of Tuesdays. And here is the thing she has never said to anybody: she does not do it because she loves it. She does love it, some of it, some of the time. But that is not the engine.

The engine is a year.

It was a long time ago now. Most of the people in this building have no idea about it. Two of them do and they have never once brought it up, and that is somehow worse, because their kindness sits there like a question nobody has closed.

She has never said the words out loud, but she has done the sum a thousand times in her body, and the sum goes: that year did damage, and I am the one who is going to make it right, and the way I make it right is that I never stop.

So she never stops. And the second urn drips, and she puts the tray under it, and she gets home at a quarter past eleven and sets the alarm for six.

She stands with both hands on the counter for a second, the way you do when there is one job left and you are working out where it lives.

You know the kitchen I mean. Maybe it is not a kitchen. Maybe it is a phone you always answer, a door you always open, a family who has never once heard you decline anything. Somebody would call you generous, and they would mean it, and you would take the word and put it in the tin with the note in it, because you know what is underneath and they do not.

You have not been able to say the word no for years. And you have never told anybody that you are not being kind. You are working something off.

Nobody is keeping a tally

Paul is writing to a church that has come out of every background there is, and he says the thing that changes a person's whole posture in a kitchen at twenty past ten.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, so that no one can boast.Ephesians 2:8 and 9

Not of works. Not partly of works. Not works as the last part left over once grace has done the heavy lifting. Not of works, full stop, and the reason Paul gives is not that works are bad. The reason is that if any of it were yours, somebody could stand up in a room and say what they contributed.

You are saved by a gift, and no part of the giving is waiting on you. That is not me softening something to be nice. Ephesians 2:9 says it is not of works so that no one can boast, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the clarity of the argument, who takes that off a page and into the feet of a woman standing at a sink at twenty past ten.

Now hear the second half of what Paul says, because a lot of tired people have been handed the first half on its own and it did real damage. The very next verse says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

So the works are not being taken away from you. They are being taken out of the wrong column. God did not save you and then look around for something to keep you busy. He made you for good work, and He got there before you did, and it was already waiting.

You have good work in front of you that God prepared before you arrived, and none of it is repayment. His word says we are His workmanship, created for good works which He prepared beforehand, and His Spirit is the one who makes a person able to do a thing out of love rather than out of owing.

Remove the paying, keep the life

Here is what makes this so hard to see from inside it. Everything about you looks right. You are the first in and the last out. The urns get done. Nobody is going to sit you down, because from every angle in that building you are the best of it, and the two people who know about the year would tell you it is finished and mean it.

But you are not serving. You are working it off, and the two things look identical from the doorway and feel nothing alike from the inside.

Serving gets tired and goes home glad. Working it off gets tired and gets up earlier, because it is measuring, and the trouble with measuring is that there is no line on the wall that says stop.

You are standing in a room where nothing is outstanding, and you have been behaving as though something is. Scripture says it is not of works so that no one can boast, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that down into a body that has been braced for eleven years.

And this needs saying plainly, in the same breath, because a comfortable lie would be no use to you at twenty past ten: the record stands and the verdict is changed. That year happened. Nobody here is telling you it did not, and nobody is going to ask you to describe it or to say how it started. What is changed is what it is allowed to ask of you. It has no claim on a Tuesday. It has no claim on your voice when a woman comes into a kitchen with half a sentence.

You have been given a word back, and the word is no. It is written that we are saved by grace through faith, not of works, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small ordinary word like that sit steady in a mouth that has not been able to hold it since before you can remember.

The breakthrough

So the turn here is not that you stop serving. Do not walk out of the kitchen. That kitchen is one of the best things about you and it always was.

The turn is that you say no to one thing, on purpose, and find out that the building does not fall down and neither do you.

You are free, and the freedom includes the freedom to decline something good. His word says it is not of works so that no one can boast, and His Spirit is the one who gets a woman through the ten seconds after she says a word she has not said in eleven years.

There is nothing here for you to contribute, and that is the hardest sentence in this message, because contributing is the one thing you are excellent at. You cannot add to what was finished. Every extra Sunday added to a thing already bought is not generosity, it is a quiet way of saying you did not quite believe it was bought. And nobody is being sharp with you about that. Faith is not a payment either. Faith is the open hand, and yours has been full of trays.

You have been bought outright, and there is nothing left running. It is written that we are saved by grace, not of works, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into an actual kitchen, on an actual night, with an actual tray under an actual drip.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in that kitchen if you can. The authority is not yours by nature and it is not mine to hand around. It is Christ's, and what He has spoken is yours in Christ because He finished it Himself, and you speak here as an ambassador saying what the King has already said. He may answer in His own way and in His own timing, and the outcome is His, never a report card on you.

  1. Sign-up sheet by the door, you are not a demand and you have no hold on me. In the name of Jesus you are a list of good work I may do or may not do, and neither one moves me an inch closer to God. It is not of works, so that no one can boast.
  2. Belief that I am here to make up for it, you have no place in this building. I am a woman bought outright by somebody with the right to do it, and He is not keeping a tally. Scripture says we are His workmanship, created for good works He prepared beforehand, and prepared is not the same word as owed.
  3. Lord Jesus, You finished it, and You have never once read me a list. Your word says it is not of works so that no one can boast, and Your Spirit is the one making me able to sit down on the stair beside You. I am naming the thing I do to make up for it, and today I am not doing it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
