Nine forty on a Sunday night and the hall is empty and the chairs are away.
He is running the vacuum in the long lines he always runs it in, up and back, up and back, because he worked out years ago that the diagonal looks better but takes eleven minutes longer. The machine has a rattle in it. He knows what the rattle is. He will fix it Tuesday.
Outside, headlights sweep the window glass and settle. His wife has been parked for twenty minutes. She does not honk. She has never once honked in nine years and that fact sits in him somewhere he does not go.
He does the sound. He does the setup and the pack down. He does the coffee order and the trash and the two runs to the dumpster. He drives the van. He is on the mowing rota in summer and the gritting rota in winter and he took the second Thursday small group when the couple who ran it moved. He unlocked this morning at six twenty and he is locking up now.
He will tell you he likes to be useful. He is not lying, exactly.
Nine years ago something happened here that he did badly.
That is all this article is going to say about it, and it is all it needs to say, because you have your own and I am not going to poke at yours either. It was not a scandal. Nobody was in the newspaper. It was the kind of failure that gets discussed in two rooms for about a month and then stops being discussed, and the discussing stops for the ordinary reason that people have their own lives.
And that is the part he cannot make himself believe.
He believes there is a tally somewhere with his name at the top of it. He believes that every chair stacked and every bag hauled goes onto the good side of it, and that some year the tally comes even and he is able to walk into that building on a Sunday morning without the small hot feeling behind his sternum that has been there since the year it happened.
The man he thinks he wronged most retired to another state four years ago and sends a Christmas card. The elders who sat with him then have turned over twice. There is a whole generation of teenagers in that building who know him only as the man who does everything, and who would be amazed to learn there had ever been anything else.
He is the only person in the building who remembers. He has been paying, alone, at a window where nobody works, for nine years.
He winds the cord around the vacuum in figure eights, puts it in the closet, checks the fire door, kills the lights in three switches in the order that keeps the corridor lit longest, and steps out into the parking lot where his wife has the engine running and the heater on for him.
And you know all of this from the inside, or you would not still be reading.
Somewhere behind you there is a year you would rather not have had. Everybody else has moved on and you have privately concluded that their moving on is a kindness rather than a fact. So you have kept up the arrangement. You do the extra. You take the shift. You are the one who stays behind. And when people thank you, you say it is nothing, and you mean something very specific by that, and nobody has ever known what.
Nobody Is at the Window
Start with the strangest fact about your situation, which is that the arrangement you have kept for years is one sided in a direction you have never considered.
You have been paying. Fine. But nobody has been collecting.
There is no window. There is no man behind the glass with a stamp and a list, marking off the Sundays, watching the tally move. The people you think are keeping the count are not keeping it. Some of them have moved. Some of them have died. Most of them, and this is the one that will take a minute to sit down in you, have simply forgotten, in the ordinary human way that people forget things that did not happen to them.
You are the last person in that building still keeping the count. I am not talking you out of your own history. Scripture says Christ called the heavy laden to come to Him, which is a name for a man carrying something nobody is asking him to carry, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a fresh look at the facts, who lifts that off a page and into a hall at nine forty at night.
And let me get in front of the thing you are about to do with this, because I know what a man like you does with a paragraph like that one. You are about to hear me say the work was worthless. I am not saying that and I will not say it.
The chairs mattered. The van mattered. That second Thursday group has people in it who would not be anywhere on a Thursday without you, and the gritting in February kept an eighty year old woman off her back in the parking lot, and none of that is being taken off you, not one item of it. The work is good and it stays.
What has to go is the reason. You have been doing good work with a bad motor in it, and the motor is what is killing you, and a man can lose the motor and keep the work. Most people never learn that they are two different things.
You have been serving out of a wound that God never asked you to serve out of. His word calls a load like yours heavy laden and calls the man carrying it toward rest, and the same Spirit who reads what is underneath a man's diary is the one saying so tonight.
Come Unto Me
Here is the sentence, and it is worth noticing who it is addressed to:
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Matthew 11:28
Not come unto me all ye who have finished. Not come when the columns balance. The invitation is addressed by name to the man in the middle of the load, at nine forty, with the cord half wound.
And notice what He offers. Not a lighter list. Not an easier rota. Rest, which is a different substance altogether, and which no amount of finishing has ever produced in anybody, because a man who is working something off is never finished by definition. The whole design of that arrangement is that it cannot conclude. That is not a flaw in how you have been doing it. That is what it is.
You are being called by the One who does the paying, and He has never once asked you to help. Matthew 11:28 puts the rest in His hands as something He gives, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an invitation land as an invitation instead of one more item on a list.
And here is what this house says in every room. The record stands and the verdict is changed. He is not going to tell you it never happened. He is not offering you a version of your own history with that year taken out, and He would not insult you with one, and you would not believe it if He did. It happened. It stands. It is in the record and the record is honest.
What has changed is what it entitles anybody to require of you. And the answer, in front of God, is nothing at all, because it was settled by somebody with the authority to settle it and He did not take it in pieces and He did not leave anything owing.
You have nothing outstanding, and you never made a single contribution to what settled it. It is written that He gives rest to the heavy laden, a gift with a giver who is not you, and the Spirit is the one who keeps that from becoming one more thing you have to be good at.
So put the brush down. Not the life. The brush.
This is the whole turn and it is easy to get wrong in either direction. You are not being told to quit the church, resign the rota, and stop caring about a building full of people you love. That would be tearing out the good with the bad and you would be miserable inside a month.
You are being told that the payment stops, and only the payment.
You are free of a requirement that was never issued, and it was called off without your involvement. He promised rest to the ones who come to Him heavy laden, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a change in how you feel about that year, who makes that a fact you can act on tonight.
Watch for the bargain, because it will come. The mind of a man who has been paying for nine years does not stop; it renegotiates. It will offer to keep everything and just feel differently about it. It will suggest a smaller arrangement, one job kept back as a token. Do not take the smaller arrangement. A reduced sentence is still a sentence, and there is no sentence.
You have been given rest as a possession, and it did not arrive as a reward. The word says He gives rest to the ones who come, plainly and without conditions attached to their record, and the Spirit is the one who holds that steady in a man on the next Sunday night when the hall is empty again.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are. The authority in them is not yours by nature; it is Christ's, delegated, and what is His in Christ is yours to speak. You are not managing God and you are not setting Him a date. He answers as He answers, and the outcome is His. Your part is to say what He has already said, and to stop reading a closed matter back to yourself on a Sunday night.
- List of jobs on that wall, you are not my sentence. Scripture says Christ called the heavy laden to come to Him and promised them rest, so the work stays and the paying stops tonight. In the name of Jesus, I am putting down what was never mine to carry.
- Fear that stopping brings it back, you are answered and you are finished with me. His word says the heavy laden are the very ones He calls, and He has never once asked a man to work off a thing that He carried Himself. You do not get to fill my calendar for one more year.
- Jesus, You called me heavy laden and You offered me rest, and I am taking You at Your word tonight in an empty church. Your word says come unto Me, so my record stands and the verdict over me is changed and there is nothing left on it to work off. I am going home at the ordinary time and leaving the rest of it where it is.
