The Good Plate

This message is for the man given the good plate as a guest at the table in the house he grew up in, who still waits to be told where to sit at his own family's Sunday meal

The rice goes on at two o'clock and the whole block knows it. By half past, the kitchen window has fogged at the corners and somebody has put the radio on low, the same station, the same three songs it has played since he was nine years old. There is a plastic runner down the middle of the table. There are eleven chairs and twelve people, and every Sunday somebody laughs about that, and nobody ever fixes it.

He comes up the steps at ten minutes before three with a bag of dinner rolls, because he cannot walk into this house with his hands empty. His mother takes the bag from him at the door the way she has taken it for twenty years, kisses the side of his head, and tells him to go on through.

He goes on through. He stands at the end of the table with his hands in his pockets.

On the table there are eight everyday plates, the ones with the small chip out of the rim, the ones that go in the machine and come out cloudy. And there is one good plate. Gold around the edge, a thin blue line inside the gold, brought out from the cabinet in the front room where it lives behind glass with the photographs. It is set at the near end, at the corner, on its own.

It is for him. It has been for him for years.

Nobody in this house has ever said one word about it. His mother would be wounded if she knew what it does to him, and she could not tell you why she sets it out, only that he was away a long time and you give the good plate to somebody you are glad to see.

He is glad to see them too. That is the part that is hard to explain to anybody.

His nephew drags a chair over and says sit here, and he sits there. The Sunday after, somebody says sit by the window, and he sits by the window. He has never once chosen his own chair in this house. He waits to be told, and he is always told kindly, and at seven he goes home and lets himself into his own place and stands in his own kitchen with his coat still on.

The good plate goes back behind the glass at eight. He knows this because for a long time he was the one who washed it by hand at the sink, carefully, while everybody else's went in the machine.

There is a house you go back to where they are glad you came, and you are still not sure you are one of them. Nobody has ever asked you to leave. Nobody has ever told you to stay either, not in words, and words are exactly the thing you have been listening for all these years. So you sit where you are put, and you are careful, and you carry the small cold feeling home with you, and you do not say it out loud, because who is there to say it to.

A guest is a beautiful thing to be, and it is not what you are

There is a kind of welcome that keeps you standing. It is warm, it is real, it hands you the best of everything the house owns, and it never once tells you the room is yours. A man can live thirty years inside a welcome like that and never sit down in it.

You are not a guest in the house of God, and you never have been. I am not putting my own good feeling over you. Scripture says He redeemed those who were under the law so that we might receive the adoption as sons, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the force of my sentence, who carries a line like that across a room and sets it down in front of a man standing with his hands in his pockets.

Read the verse slowly, because it moves twice and most of us only ever hear it move once.

to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sonsGalatians 4:5

The first movement is the buying. Somebody with the standing to act came and bought people out from under a thing that held them. That is the half we quote. The second movement is what the buying was for, and it is not a permission slip and it is not a probation. It is adoption. Sons. A name, a chair, a share, and an argument at the table that you are entitled to have.

A redemption that only bought you out would leave you free and standing in the street. This one bought you out and brought you in, and the bringing in was never an afterthought God got around to later. It is in the same breath of the same verse.

You have been placed, and being placed is not the same thing as being welcomed. Welcome is what a kind house does at the door. Placing is what a father does with a chair, and Galatians 4:5 says the placing is already done, with the Holy Spirit standing over that word to make it live in you instead of sitting on a page you happen to agree with.

The word underneath the word is a buying word

Here is the thing about redemption. It is not a warm word to begin with. It is a hard, practical word out of ordinary life, and it means somebody with the right to act stepped in, met what was owed in full, and took the person home. It is finished the moment it is done. Nothing about it is provisional. Nobody comes back later to check whether the one who was bought has turned out to be worth it.

And notice what redemption does not do. It does not delete anything. The years he was away really happened. He knows the length of them to the month. His mother knows. Everybody at that table knows, and the kindest thing about that family is that they have decided never to bring it up, and the hardest thing about that family is exactly the same fact.

The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of those are true in the same sentence, and any message that hands you only one of them has told you something false about your own life. God does not tidy your history away to make you feel better. He does something far more solid than that. He leaves it standing, and He changes what it decides, because what settles who you are is no longer the record at all. It is the buying.

You are owned outright, and there is no clause in it about your behavior at the table. That is not warmth talking. It is written that we were bought with a price, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is the one who takes the word bought and quietly detaches it from every performance you have been running since you came back.

So the corner seat is not a verdict. It never was. It is a house being kind in the only language it has. But you have been reading it as a sentence, and the reason it keeps working on you is that no louder word about your place has ever been spoken over you out loud.

You have a name in that house that nobody there gave you and nobody there can take back. His word calls you a son and an heir, not a visitor with good manners, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as fact rather than as a compliment somebody paid you.

The breakthrough

I want to put one specific thing back in your hands, and it is not a general feeling about the love of God. It is your seat.

Not a seat you earn by turning up every Sunday with bread rolls. Not a seat you keep by being easy to have around. The seat that belongs to a son in his father's house, handed over at the buying, settled long before you ever noticed you were standing.

You are seated, and you were seated before you felt one thing about it. It is written that He raised us up together and seated us together in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of your certainty, who makes a sentence like that carry weight in a man's chest at seven in the evening in his own kitchen with his coat still on.

Let the good plate be what it actually is. It is somebody who loves you doing the best thing they know how to do with their hands. Take the kindness. Give it back with both hands. And stop reading your standing off the china, because your standing was settled somewhere else entirely, by somebody with every right to settle it.

You have been bought outright, and nothing about you is on loan. His word says you are not your own, you were bought with a price, and the same Spirit who says it in Scripture says it in you, by name, in the room you are sitting in right now.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, where you are, at whatever volume the room allows. The authority in them is not yours by nature. It is His, delegated to you in Christ, and the outcome is His too, however He answers.

  1. Good plate at the corner, you are a kindness and you are not a verdict. The Word of God says I was bought out and brought in, so I take the chair that Jesus set for me. I sit down.
  2. Feeling that I am only tolerated, you do not get to set the table in my life. I am here as a son and not on anybody's goodwill, because Scripture says the buying is finished, and in the name of Jesus I put you out of this house.
  3. Lord Jesus, You bought me and You seated me, and Your word says I am a son and not a guest. I am not waiting to be told where I sit in my Father's house. I am sitting down at Your table today, and I am staying.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
