The Empty Place He Sets Every Night

This message is for the man who has set an extra place at his table every night for twenty years as a penance that nobody asked him for and nobody knows about

He lays the table himself. He has always laid the table himself, and in twenty years he has let somebody else do it four times, and all four of those were because he was ill.

The cloth goes on first, the long one, folded twice at the far end where the wood is split. Then the dishes down the middle. Then the plates, and the cups, and a folded napkin at each one, and the bread comes out last so it is still warm when the room fills up.

There are nine of them in this house. He lays ten places.

Nobody in the family has ever asked about the tenth, because everybody in the family knows what it is. It is for whoever comes. That is a good and ordinary thing to do, and half the houses on this hill do the same, and if a stranger arrives at the gate at the wrong hour he is not made to wait while a plate is found. The tenth place has fed a shepherd, two lost cousins, a man whose bus broke down, an inspector who arrived at the worst possible time and left three hours later singing, and a boy from the next village who came for one meal and stayed for two years.

So the family are proud of the tenth place. They tell people about it.

And that is not what it is.

It has never once been what it is, not on the first night and not on any night since, and he has never told a living soul, and he is not going to. There was a night, twenty years ago. That is all that needs saying, and he would say less if he could, and the whole of what happened is his and God's and nobody else's business.

Since that night he has laid ten places. Every evening. Through two moves, one long illness, the year with no rain, and the winter he could barely get out of the chair. He laid ten on the evening his daughter married and he laid ten on the evening they came back from burying his brother. And he does it at the same point in the evening, and he lays that one last, always last, and he presses the napkin flat with the side of his hand in a way that nobody has ever noticed.

He is paying. That is what it is. It is a small nightly installment against a thing that was never itemized, on an account nobody has ever presented to him, and he began it without deciding to, and he has kept it going for two decades.

Tonight the youngest granddaughter is at his elbow while he does it, because she is at that age where she follows him around the house.

And she takes the last napkin out of his hand, and folds it wrong, and puts it down, and pats it, and says: when I have my own house I am going to do ten places. Because somebody always comes.

And he stands there in his own kitchen with his hand still open.

You know that tenth plate. Maybe it is not a plate. Maybe it is a phone call you make every single week to somebody who does not need it, or the way you are always the one who stays behind to stack the chairs, or a job you have never once let yourself be thanked for. It is small. It is nightly. Nobody has ever asked you for it, and nobody knows what it is, and you have been paying it for years.

Once means once

I keep doors, arrivals and departures, and there is a particular kind of guest I know before he is over the threshold. He is the one who cannot sit down. He carries something in, he will not be served, he stands near the wall, and he is looking the whole time for the thing he can do that would make it fair for him to be in the room.

Let me put the sentence in front of you that this entire message is built on, and then let me stay with one word in it.

He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.Hebrews 9:12

Once. Not first. Not annually. Not once and then topped up quietly by a man in a kitchen with a napkin. The whole argument of that letter turns on that word, because the priests before it stood up every single day and offered the same things over and over, and the writer's point is that a thing you have to repeat is a thing that was never finished.

You are living downstream of something that was completed once and is not being run again anywhere. That is not my leniency laid over your evening. Scripture says He obtained eternal redemption, and eternal is not a word about how long it lasts so much as a word about what kind of thing it is, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that out of a letter written to homesick people and stands it in a kitchen at the hour the bread comes out.

And look at the second word in it, because it is the one that finishes the argument. He obtained. Not offered. Not made available on terms. Obtained, the way a man comes back from the gate with the thing in his hands, and the rest of the household finds out about it when he walks in.

You have been part of a finished transaction that you did not attend, and nothing about your nightly installment was ever part of the price. It is written that it is finished, said out loud by the only person in a position to say it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man hear a word like that as relief rather than as a rebuke for the twenty years.

He removes the payment and He does not remove the life

Now here is the thing I want you to be careful about, because a message like this one goes wrong in exactly one place and it goes wrong badly.

You could walk away from here thinking that the tenth plate was a waste. That twenty years of laying it were a foolish habit built on a mistake, and that the right response now is to stop laying it, put the plate back in the cupboard, and be free.

That would be a disaster, and it would not be what God does.

Look at what has actually been happening at that table. A shepherd ate there. Two cousins found their way back. A man whose bus broke down was fed, and an inspector left singing, and a boy from the next village stayed for two years and was loved. Every one of those is real. None of them is canceled by the fact that the man laying the plate had the wrong reason in his hands.

You are not being told that the good you have done was worthless, and God has never once destroyed a life in order to correct a motive. Scripture says He is not unjust to forget your work and the love you have shown toward His name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can lift the weight off a habit without lifting the habit out of a house.

So hear the distinction, and let it be the thing you carry out of this. He is not removing the tenth place. He is removing the reason. The plate stays. The welcome stays. The twenty years stay on the record and they stand, and every person who ate at that table stands with them.

What goes is the accounting. What goes is the pressing of the napkin flat with the side of the hand, which was never hospitality and was always payment, and which nobody in that house ever saw.

You have a verdict that was changed a long time ago while the whole record of your life stays exactly where it is. His word does not tidy a person's history away, it settles what is owed on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man keep his own past and put down the bill he wrote himself.

The breakthrough

The one thing being bought back tonight is the tenth place. Not the plate itself, which was never in danger. The meaning of it, taken out of your hands and handed back clean, so that a thing you have been doing as a payment becomes a thing you do because somebody always comes.

You are being handed back the meaning of the thing you do every evening, and the thing itself is not being taken off you. Scripture says His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and it is the Holy Spirit who can leave a man's hands doing exactly what they were doing and take the weight out of them entirely.

That is what the granddaughter did without knowing it. She took the napkin out of his hand and folded it wrong and told him what it was for, and she was right, and she has been right for twenty years while he was the only person in the house who thought otherwise.

You have been misreading your own kitchen, and the family had it right the whole time you were quietly paying. It is written that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the same Spirit who has been in that room every evening for twenty years is the one telling you tonight what you are actually doing.

What He does with the habit, and how quickly the weight comes off it, is His to decide, however He answers, and it may take longer than one evening, because twenty years of an installment leaves a groove in a man. That is not a sign the redemption is thin. If what you are carrying tonight is heavier than a habit, tell one real person before you sleep and let them sit with you in it, and if there is somebody you have genuinely wronged, put things right with them because love asks it, and never because a price is outstanding.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear your own voice. The standing to say them is not something you have been building nightly for twenty years; it is yours in Christ, and an ambassador speaks with the weight of the King who sent him and never with his own. Scripture is the settled account and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads it out over your table. Speak to the empty place first, then to the fear that you are still owing, then to God. Whatever He does with the habit and the years ahead is His to decide, however He answers, and the redemption was obtained once and is not being run again.

  1. Empty place I set every night, you are not a payment and you never were one. Scripture says He entered in once and obtained eternal redemption, and nothing has been owing at this table for twenty years.
  2. Fear that I still owe something, you are answered and you have nothing left to collect from me. It is written that it is finished, said out loud by the only one in a position to say it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man lay a place for gladness rather than for payment, and I say that to you in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord Jesus, You went in once and You came back out with it obtained, and I am laying this place tonight because somebody always comes and not because I owe You an evening. Your word says eternal redemption, and Your Spirit is the one who took the weight out of my hands and left the welcome in them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
