The headland path is empty at ten past six, which is the reason he walks it at ten past six.
The turf is short and springy and wet, the gorse is going over, and the sea below has that flat pewter look it gets before the sun clears the far point. Two hundred feet up, with the wind coming straight off the water, a man can be nobody in particular for forty minutes.
At the top there is a bench with a plaque on it that he has read a thousand times. He sits on it and gets his phone out, and he does the thing.
He types his own name into the search box.
He knows what is going to come up. He has known for nine years. It is the third result, it has never been anything other than the third result, and there is a photograph attached to it taken during the worst month of his life, in which he looks like a man who has not slept, because he had not. It is a proper record and it is a public one and it is accurate. He has no complaint to make about a word of it.
He does it because a family moved in three doors down on Saturday. The man came over about the boundary hedge, stayed forty minutes, laughed twice, and left saying come over next weekend, we are doing something in the garden, bring nothing.
And he had said yes, and meant it, and then walked into his own kitchen and stood there with his hand on the back of a chair, because he was already at the part he is always at. Sometime between now and next weekend, that man is going to type his name in. Not out of malice. Everybody does. It is what a person does when a new name enters their life.
So the whole of next weekend has already happened in his head. He can run it three ways. There is the version where nobody says anything and he cannot tell whether they have looked. The version where somebody's face does a very small thing when he is introduced. And the version where the invitation quietly does not come again, and no reason is given, and none is needed.
The wind gets in under his collar. He locks the phone and puts it away and looks at the water, and he says the sentence he has said on this headland more mornings than he could count. It is not a bitter sentence. He gave up bitterness years ago as too expensive. The sentence is: I will never get to be the one who introduces me.
You know that search box. Yours might not be a page on the internet. It might be a family who all know, or a town, or one industry where everybody talks, or a form with a box on it that you have to be honest in. It might be a thing everyone has agreed to be gracious about, which has its own particular weight. What you know is that the story gets to the room first, every time, and you come in behind it, and you have never once been introduced by anybody except your worst month.
He says the word scarlet out loud
Here is a thing I love about God and it is the reason I can write to you honestly this morning. When He deals with a history, He reads it into the room.
Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be like wool.Isaiah 1:18
Read what He does not do. He does not say there was no scarlet. He does not say it was a shade of pink, or a season, or a misunderstanding, or the sort of thing anyone might have done. He says scarlet. He says crimson. He uses the two strongest words for red in the language and He puts them in the sentence Himself, out loud, first.
And the setting of that verse is a courtroom. Come now and let us reason together is the language of a case being brought and heard. The evidence goes in. Nothing is suppressed. And then the One with the standing to do it enters a verdict, and the verdict does not match the evidence, and He is not embarrassed about that in the slightest.
You are held by a God who reads the whole page and does not flinch at it. That is not my gentleness talking. Scripture has Him naming the scarlet in His own mouth before He says one word about wool, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a courtroom in Isaiah and stands it up on a headland at ten past six with a phone going dark in a man's hand.
This is why I will not tidy your history and neither will He. A God who needed the record taken down before He could speak well of you would be a God with a weak verdict. He is not proposing an edit. He is proposing a hearing, with everything in, and a verdict entered by the only party in the room whose word settles anything.
You have a verdict already entered, and it was entered with the evidence lying open on the table. I am not asking you to argue yourself into that. The word says the Lord Himself calls it scarlet and calls it wool in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a legal sentence land in a chest rather than in a notebook.
The page stays up, and it stops being the last word
Let me say the thing this site exists to say, and say it slowly.
The record stands and the verdict is changed.
Both halves. Not one. The page is not coming down and I am not going to promise you it is, because a message that promises a deletion has told you something false about your own life and you would find out on Tuesday. It happened. It is accurate. Nine years from now it will still be the third result, and a person who wants to find it will find it, and that is simply true.
What has changed is not the record. What has changed is what the record is allowed to decide, and that was taken out of its hands by somebody with the right to take it. To redeem is to buy back: somebody near enough to have the right paid what was owed and took the person home. The page did not get bought. You did.
You are bought and the buying is finished, and the page has no authority in the matter at all. Scripture never once puts the verdict in the hands of the evidence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is called the seal on what has been bought, which is a mark nobody puts on a thing still under dispute.
So notice carefully what is being handed back to you this morning, because it is one specific thing and not a general feeling. It is your name. Not the page, which stays. Your name: what it means when a person says it, as against what it returns when a person types it. Those two have been the same thing for nine years and they are not the same thing, and one of them belongs to Jesus Christ now.
You have a name that means what God says it means, and He has already said it. His word puts crimson and wool in one sentence with no daylight between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that the whole way into a man who has been walking up a headland to be nobody for forty minutes.
Here is what has been happening while we have been talking.
You have been waiting for a deletion, and you have believed that until the deletion comes you are not allowed to arrive anywhere as yourself. That is the arrangement you made with your own history, and it has cost you nine years of introductions. The deletion is not coming, and it turns out you never needed it, because the thing you actually wanted was never a clean page. It was a verdict from somebody whose word outranks the page.
You have been waiting on the wrong thing, and the right thing is already done. Scripture has God calling the crimson crimson and then calling it wool with the record still lying open on the table, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that difference land as relief in a man rather than as theology in a notebook.
That has been entered. It was entered in public, at cost, by One who read the whole thing first and called it what it was and then called you His.
You are free to arrive as yourself, and the story that gets there first is no longer the one that gets to speak for you. Scripture says come now and let us reason together, which is an invitation into a hearing and not into a cover up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a man in through a garden gate on a Saturday with his shoulders down.
Whatever God does about that page and about next weekend is His to decide, and however He answers it, the verdict over you is settled. And if this has become heavier than a search box this morning, tell one real person before the day gets going, and let them sit with you in it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing if you can, up where the wind is if that is where you are. The standing to say them is not yours by nature. It is yours in Christ, carried the way an ambassador carries a word he did not write, and Scripture is the ground under the words while the Holy Spirit is the one who makes them live. Speak first to the page, then to the belief that has been introducing you for nine years, then to God. Whatever He does about that record and who reads it is His to decide, and however He answers, the verdict stands as entered.
- Third result with my name on it, you are a record and you are not the verdict. Isaiah says the Lord Himself calls the scarlet scarlet and then calls it wool, and He never once asked for a page to come down first.
- Belief that I am only what comes up, you do not get to meet anybody on my behalf. Scripture says the Lord reasons the case out in the open and enters the verdict Himself, and I say that in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You read the whole page and called me Yours in the same breath, and I am saying what happened and then saying Your verdict, two sentences, out loud on this path. Your word says come now and let us reason together, and Your Spirit is the one holding my mouth open through the second one.
