The chairs are bolted together in rows of four, and if the person two seats down shifts their weight you feel it come along the bar and into your own hip, which is a strange kind of company at twenty past nine on a Tuesday morning.
She always takes the end of a row. There is a water cooler by the noticeboard with no cups left in the sleeve, and a screen above the desk that changes the number with a small tone, and somebody's toddler is walking the length of the carpet with great seriousness, one hand on the wall the whole way.
It is once a year. She is not unwell. It is a review, the kind that keeps something looked after, and she goes because she is a sensible woman who intends to be around for a long time, and she is glad the appointment exists.
What she cannot get used to is the file.
Because somewhere in the building, and in about four seconds on a screen, there is the true and complete account of one year of her life. Not the summary she gives. Not the sentence she has worked out for people who ask, which is accurate and leaves out the middle. The whole thing, in order, with dates, written down at the time by people who were being careful and professional and thorough, and it is all correct.
She has never told anybody. Not her sister. Not the woman she has prayed with every week for six years. Not the man she married after.
And once a year she sits in a chair while a person she has never met before scrolls it, and reads the year in about eleven seconds, and then looks up and says good morning and asks how she has been keeping. They are kind about it. They are always kind about it. That is not the problem, and she has stopped being able to explain what the problem is even to herself, because it is not that anybody is unkind and it is not that the file is wrong.
It is that the file is right.
The number changes on the screen with its little tone, and she stands up, and on the way down the corridor she has the thought she has every single year, in exactly the same words: that is the real version, and everything else is what I have been managing to put over people since.
You know that file. Maybe yours is not on a screen in a clinic. Maybe it is a person who was there, or a stretch of your own memory that runs without your permission at four in the morning, or a document in a drawer that says it plainly and correctly. People talk as though it did not happen. It did happen, and it is written down, and you are the one who knows it is all true.
He never once says it did not happen
I want to take you to a sentence God says about Himself, and I want to read it slowly, because it is nearly always quoted at people in a way that would not survive the corridor of that clinic.
I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and remembers your sins no more.Isaiah 43:25
Two things in there, and the second one is where everybody skids.
Blots out is a courtroom word before it is a comfort word. What is blotted out is a charge on an indictment. It is the thing that would be read against you if there were a hearing, and God says He is the one who removes it, and He gives His reason, and His reason is Himself. Not your improvement. Not the passage of time. For My own sake.
You have had the charge removed by the only party with the standing to remove it. That is not my gentle reading of the verse. Isaiah 43:25 says blots out and gives the ground as His own sake, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a legal word out of a prophet and carries it into a corridor with a screen and a small tone in it.
Now the second half, and here is where I have to be careful with you, because a careless preacher will tell you it means God has forgotten, and you know perfectly well that a year of your life did not evaporate, and if what I am offering you depends on pretending it did, you will put this down and you will be right to.
Remembers no more is covenant language. In that language, to remember is to act on, and to not remember is to refuse to bring it forward. It does not mean the Almighty has mislaid part of your biography. It means He has bound Himself never to raise it against you again, and He was the only one who could have.
You are held by somebody who has committed Himself in writing to never bring it up. Scripture says remembers your sins no more, which is a promise about what He will not do rather than a claim about what He cannot recall, and the Spirit is the one who makes that arrive as safety instead of as a technicality.
The file is accurate. The file is not the ruling.
So let me say the two things this whole site says, in one breath, because this is the category they were written for.
The record stands and the verdict is changed.
The file is right. Every line of it. It was written by careful people and it says what happened, and nothing about being redeemed reaches into a building and alters a document, and nothing you have read here is asking you to pretend otherwise. It is a good thing that it is accurate, and it is a good thing that you keep going, and please keep going: the appointment is care, and care is not shame, and you were never meant to hold your health hostage to your history.
And the verdict has been changed. A record is an account of what occurred. A verdict is what it now means about who you are and whose you are, and those are two entirely different objects, and you have spent years letting the first one hand down the second one because nobody ever told you it was not entitled to.
You are living under a ruling and not under a document. His word says the Lord is the one who blots out and does not bring it forward, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps those two things from collapsing into each other on the mornings you walk down that corridor.
There is a person in that room reading your file to look after you. That is what it is for and that is all it is for. It is not evidence in a hearing, because there is no hearing, because the One with the right to rule on your life ruled already, for His own sake, and did not consult the document to do it.
You were ruled on by God Himself and not by the most accurate paragraph ever written about you. It is written that He blots out for His own sake, which means the ground of the ruling never sat inside your file at all, and the same Spirit who is called the seal on the redeemed is the one saying so in your chest right now.
Here is what has already been settled about the year in that file, and it was settled long before this year's appointment came round.
Nobody is going to read it against you. Not because it is not readable, and not because it is not true. Because the charge that could have been read has been blotted out by the only one entitled to blot it out, and He did it for His own sake, which is the only reason strong enough to hold when you are having the four in the morning version of yourself.
You are standing in front of an accurate file and a changed verdict, and the second one is the one that decides. Isaiah 43:25 gives the ruling and gives the ground, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been trying to get the difference between those two objects into you every year you have walked down that corridor with the same sentence in your head.
So the sentence you say to yourself on the way out changes. That is the real thing being bought back today, and it is smaller and more specific than a general sense of peace: one sentence, once a year, in one corridor. The old one said, that is the real version. The new one is a fact, and it is that the file is the record and God has given the verdict, and He gave it without needing the file amended first.
You have been given a verdict that did not wait for the record to be improved. The word says He blots out for His own sake, and the same Spirit who wrote that line through a prophet is the one holding it steady over you while a stranger scrolls.
If sitting in that chair has become more than you can carry alone, say so out loud to one real person before your next appointment, and let them come and sit in the row with you. That is not a lack of faith. That is a body being looked after, and God has never once asked anybody to do the hard hour by themselves.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you can hear yourself. The standing to speak them is not yours by nature; it is yours because you are in Christ, and everything that ruling secured has been given to you, so the ground under the words and the words themselves are the same thing. Scripture is what you stand on and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live. Speak to the file first, then to what you have believed about yourself because of it, and then to God. However He answers about the years ahead and the appointments in them, the ruling is His and it is already given, and that part is not up for review.
- File on the clinic screen, you are accurate and you are not the ruling. Isaiah says the Lord Himself blots out my transgressions and does not bring them up against me, and the one with the right to rule has already ruled.
- Suspicion that this is who I really am, you have nothing to stand on here. His word says He blotted it out for His own sake, so the ground of the verdict was never inside any document about me, and I say that in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You gave the ruling without waiting for the record to be amended, and I am walking down that corridor this year saying what You said instead of what I have always said. The file stands and the verdict is Yours and it is already given, and Your Spirit is the seal on it.
