The form has been on the kitchen table since Tuesday. It has been moved for dinner, moved back, moved for homework, moved back. It has a ring on the corner from a mug and a small buckle in the paper where somebody put a cereal bowl down on it.
She has done all the easy parts. Name. The addresses going back five years, which took a while and made her laugh once, remembering a boiler. Two people who will speak for her, and she has asked them both, and they both said yes straight away and meant it.
And then there is the box.
It is a small box. It is the same size as all the other boxes on the page, which is a strange thing to be angry about at half past nine at night and she is a bit angry about it anyway.
She is going to tick it. That was decided a long time ago, in a different kitchen, and it has never once been in question since. She is not sitting here weighing whether to be honest. She stopped being the kind of person who weighs that.
What she is sitting here doing is something else, and it takes longer, and nobody warns you about it.
She is imagining the room. Somebody in an office she has never been in, opening this, reading her name at the top with her handwriting still fresh on it, getting to the box, and then reading the rest of the page differently. The addresses differently. The two people who said yes straight away differently. She can feel the whole page reorganizing itself around one small tick, and the worst of it is that it is not unfair. That is what the box is for. It is doing its job.
The radiator ticks as it cools. The mug is cold and she drinks it anyway.
She would like the tick and the truth about her to be able to sit on the same page without one of them eating the other. She has been a Christian eleven years. She knows the verse. She has said it in a church car park to a friend who needed it and she said it well and meant it. And here she is at her own table with a biro, and it turns out that knowing a thing and being able to hold it in the same hand as a form are not the same skill at all.
She puts the pen down. Picks it up.
You know this and it is not about a form.
There is something true about your life that other people are allowed to know and that changes the way a room looks at you. And you have got used to living with two facts that will not sit down together: what actually happened, which is real and is not going anywhere, and what God has said about you, which you believe, and which somehow never seems to be in the room at the same time as the paperwork.
Two True Things In The Same Breath
Most of what gets said to a person in this position is a version of do not worry about it, and it is meant kindly and it is useless, because it asks you to make one of the two facts smaller. Usually the first one. Play it down. Put it in perspective. Remember that it was a long time ago.
Nothing here asks you to do that. What happened, happened. It is on a form because it is real. Making it smaller in order to feel better about it is not faith, it is filing, and you have tried it and it does not hold at half past nine at night with a biro in your hand.
You are carrying two true things at once, and you were never asked to cancel one of them out. I am not offering you a coping technique. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the neatness of that sentence, who carries it off a page and onto a kitchen table with a ring on the corner of the paper.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1
Read what it does not say. It does not say there is now no history. It does not say nothing happened. It does not say that when somebody in an office reads your page they will read it the way your friends do.
It says condemnation. That is a verdict word. It is what a court hands down after the facts are agreed, and the facts here are agreed, and they are agreed by you first of all, which is why you are ticking the box.
The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of those are true in the same breath and neither one is being asked to be quieter so the other can be heard.
You have been cleared by God on the facts as they actually are, not on a tidied version. His word says He justifies the ungodly rather than the presentable, and the Spirit is the one who makes that read as relief instead of as a technicality you would not dare lean on.
No Condemnation Is A Verdict, Not A Mood
Here is the part that changes what tonight feels like.
A mood arrives and leaves. You have had evenings where you felt entirely His and evenings where you felt like a person with a box to tick, and you have quietly assumed the true one is whichever you are having at the time. That assumption is the thing costing you sleep.
A verdict is not like that. It was passed at a specific moment by somebody with the standing to pass it, on the whole of the evidence, and it does not consult your Tuesday. It does not get reopened when a form arrives in the post. Nobody in any office anywhere has the authority to review it, because it was not passed in their court.
You are standing on a decision that was made about you and not by you. It is written that it is God who justifies, and then Scripture asks who is left to bring a charge, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that question land in a kitchen instead of staying in an argument.
And this is where the honesty of it becomes the beauty of it. If the verdict depended on the record being clean, you would have to keep the record clean, and you would spend your life doing what you have been doing: managing what people know, steering conversations, dreading a small box on a page. The verdict does not depend on the record. It depends on Christ, and He is not in the process of changing His mind about you between now and whenever that office opens the envelope.
You have been made His on ground that a form cannot reach. The word says nothing in all creation separates you from His love, and it is the same Spirit who bears witness with your spirit that nothing means the paperwork too.
So tick the box.
Not as an act of courage, and not as a penance either. Tick it as somebody who has nothing riding on the answer, because the thing you have been afraid the box could take from you was never in the box's keeping.
What you have been doing at that table for four nights is trying to get the verdict and the record to arrive in the same sentence. They never will. A sentence only holds one of them at a time, and that is a fact about grammar and not a fact about you.
You are His while the tick is still wet on the page, and that has never once been in review. It is written that neither death nor life nor anything present nor anything to come separates you from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes anything present mean this envelope, this week, this office.
Nothing you do adds to this. Not eleven years of being good since. Not the two people who said yes straight away. Not tonight's honesty, real as it is. Those are the life you are living inside the verdict, and none of them were ever part of how it was reached.
You are free to be entirely honest and entirely His at once, and the two have never actually been in competition. His word says the truth sets free, and it is the Spirit who makes free mean free of the managing, not free of the facts.
Declare this over yourself
- Box on that form, you are not my verdict. Scripture says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and a tick in a box does not overturn a thing God has settled. I am filling you in honestly and I am staying His while I do it.
- Fear of being what people get told about, be quiet in me. In the name of Jesus I put down the managing and the steering and the dread of a small square on a page, because the verdict over me was not passed in anybody's office. I am cleared on the facts as they actually are.
- Jesus, You justify the ungodly and You did not need a tidier version of me to do it. You are not changing Your mind between tonight and whenever that envelope is opened, and I am ticking the box with my name still fresh at the top.
