Nineteen Years, Not One Absence

This message is for the woman who has taught the same class for nineteen years without missing a single week, and who is frightened of what missing one would prove about her

Twenty past nine and the room is hers for another ten minutes, which is why she comes at twenty past nine.

She puts the chairs in a ring. Not a horseshoe, a ring, because a horseshoe leaves somebody at the open end, and she worked that out in her second year. Fourteen chairs. The wobbly one goes where she can reach it with her foot. The jug of squash, the tin with the lid that sticks, the box of pencils all the wrong lengths now that she cannot throw out.

Then the book. Hardbacked, blue, the kind schools used to use, and it is the fourth one because the first three are in the cupboard under the stairs at home. Her handwriting goes back through it in every color of pen she has owned. And there is not one gap in it.

Not one. Nineteen years of Sundays and there is no week where somebody else's writing takes over, no line ruled through, no note in the margin that says covered by. She taught with a fever and no voice. She taught the week she moved house, with the boxes still in the van. She taught the Sunday after the worst news she has ever been given, and afterwards a woman said, you are so strong, and she said thank you, and went home and sat in the car a while before going in.

Once, years ago, a lovely young man offered to cover for her so she could have a Sunday, and she said no before he had finished the sentence. He looked slightly startled. So did she, honestly. The speed of it surprised them both.

She could tell you what she is afraid of, but only if you did not look at her while she said it. She is not afraid the class would collapse. It would be fine.

She is afraid of what she would be that Sunday morning at half past nine, sitting in her own kitchen, with the kettle on and nothing required of her, and nobody needing her to be there, and the whole terrible spare hour of it. She is afraid of what would be left when the doing stopped. Nineteen years is a long time to avoid finding that out, and she has done it one Sunday at a time.

Twenty five past. Voices in the corridor already. She puts the tin where the small one who always goes for the pink wafers can reach it, and she puts her foot on the wobbly chair, and she is smiling before the door opens because she means it, and all of that is true at the same time as the other thing.

And you have a streak. Yours might not be a Sunday. It might be a phone call you have never once missed, a standard you have never once dropped, a thing you do quietly every week and have never told anybody you do. And underneath it, if you go looking, something is being worked off, and you have never written down what it is for.

The work is real. The paying underneath it is not.

Let me say the first thing carefully, because if I get it wrong you will close this and you will be right to.

Nineteen years of Sundays is not a mistake. Those children were taught, and that room was safe because she made it safe. None of that is going anywhere and none of it is being taken off her today. God is not about to tell a woman that two decades of love was a misunderstanding.

There are two things stacked in that room and only one is coming out. On top is the work, and it is good, and it is hers, and it stays. Underneath, holding it up, is a paying off, and that is what is being lifted out from under her, because it was never load bearing and it was never asked for.

You are already paid for, and the thing you have been quietly working off was settled before you started. Scripture says the one who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the volume of my sentence, who carries that into a room at twenty past nine with the chairs in a ring.

For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.Hebrews 4:10

Look at what it does not say. It does not say stop working, and it does not say the works were bad works. It says a person who has come into His rest stopped the way He stopped, which is not the way of somebody who ran out of strength. He rested because it was done, not because He was tired.

And if some of what you carry was pushed into your hands rather than chosen, if you were young when somebody told you what you would have to do to be acceptable, and you have been doing it ever since, then that was not a promise you made. Scripture does not read a pushed signature as a signature, and the Holy Spirit has never once held you to a bill somebody else wrote in your name.

You have been standing on finished ground the whole nineteen years, and the streak was never what was holding you up. It is written that by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified (Hebrews 10:14), and the Spirit of God is the one who makes for all time mean including the Sunday you were not there.

Rest is not a reward for finishing

Here is the thing about a streak. It never tells you what it is for.

Ask her and she will say it is for the children, and that is honest and it is not the whole of it. Underneath, unexamined for nineteen years, there is a quiet arrangement: as long as I am in that room every week, something is being kept level. She could not tell you what, and that is the point, because a thing you can name you can question, and a thing you have never named just goes on running.

You are not on trial behind your own good works, and there is nothing being held against your attendance. His word says it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not a result of works (Ephesians 2:8), and it is the Holy Spirit who takes not of yourselves and makes it land on the one person in the building who has never missed a week.

And here is the honest half, because a message that tidies your life away has lied to you about your life. The tiredness was real and some of it was not necessary. The Sunday she taught after the worst news is in the record and always will be, and God is not embarrassed by that page.

The record stands. The verdict is changed. She was never earning it, so she was never in danger of falling behind on it, and the whole apparatus underneath the good work has been running on something that was settled before she was born.

You are being handed one thing back today, and it is a single Sunday. Scripture says there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God (Hebrews 4:9), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes remains mean available now rather than promised at the end.

One Sunday. Not the class, not the calling, not the ring of chairs. One morning at half past nine when nothing is required of you and you are still exactly who you were the week before. That is what the streak took, and that is what is being bought back and put in your hand.

You have a self that exists when nobody needs you, and it was bought at the same time as everything else. It is written that we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand (Ephesians 2:10), and the same Spirit who wrote workmanship first and works second is the one keeping them in that order over you.

The breakthrough

Here is what turns in the classroom.

You have been paying for something that was already bought, and the fear underneath your streak was never about the class. It was the fear that the doing is what you are. That if the doing stopped there would be a spare hour and nothing in it and no way to answer the question.

There is an answer to the question and it is not a comfortable one, because it is not an achievement. You are bought. That is the answer. It was true at twenty past nine on your first Sunday and it will be true on the Sunday you are not there.

You have been bought outright, and your attendance was never part of the price. Scripture says you were bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes bought a completed act rather than an arrangement you keep current.

So the work stays. I am not talking you out of your class and I would be a poor teacher if I did. Go on putting the chairs in a ring. The love was real and it is not under review.

What goes is the reason underneath it. From today the class is a gift you give, freely, out of a life that is already settled, and not a week of a sentence you are serving quietly in a building where everybody thinks you are marvelous.

You are free to be absent once without being anything less, and there is nothing being deducted while you sit in your own kitchen. It is written that whoever has entered His rest has ceased from his own works (Hebrews 4:10), and the same Spirit who moved on the man who wrote that is the one saying it over a woman with nineteen years of handwriting in a blue book.

The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of them go to the tenth Sunday of the twentieth year with you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the ring of chairs, or in your own kitchen at half past nine. The standing you speak from is delegated and it is yours because of what He finished, not because of nineteen years of Sundays; you are an ambassador, and an ambassador does not earn the right to speak. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is what carries it. Whatever He does with the class, and however long the fear takes to go, is His timing, and the outcome is His.

  1. Register with nineteen years in it, you are a record of real love and you are not my standing. Scripture says the one who has entered His rest has ceased from his own works, and I am not working anything off in you. In the name of Jesus, you are a book and not a scale.
  2. Fear of what one missed week proves, you have had nineteen years of my Sundays and you are not the answer to your own question. It is written that by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified, and the Holy Spirit says bought where you kept saying prove it again.
  3. Lord, You finished it and You rested because it was done and not because You were tired. I thank You that Your word says there remains a rest for Your people, and Your Spirit is the one sitting in my kitchen on the morning nobody needs me. I am naming the thing out loud now, and I am not doing it today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
