Side of the hall, ten minutes before. The chairs are out in rows and about a third of them have coats on them. Somebody is doing something to a cable at the front. The heating has come on too late and the room still smells of the morning.
Delia stands where the curtain meets the wall, because that is where you stand when you are on next and there is nowhere to sit that is not in front of people. She has her notes. She knows her notes. She is not thinking about her notes.
She is watching the man with the card.
He is a good man. He has been kind to her since the first time. He is reading the card over to himself, moving his lips, the way people do when they want to get a name right, and she already knows what is on it, because she has heard it eleven times in four years and it is always the same and it always begins the same way.
He will say her name. Then he will pause, because he thinks the pause is respectful, and it is, he means it. Then he will say the year. He will use the phrase people use, the one that came from somewhere and stuck, and the room will make that small sound rooms make. Somebody near the back will breathe out through their nose. Then he will say something about how far she has come, and there will be warmth in it, real warmth, and by the time she gets to the microphone every person in that room will have met the year before they met her.
She has tried writing her own introduction. She got two lines in and stopped, because without the year the two lines were about nothing at all, which is the thought she cannot get out from underneath. She has tried asking him not to. She got as far as the car park after the third one and did not do it, because how do you tell a kind man that the kindest thing he does to you every time is the thing you cannot bear.
The truth is worse than the introduction, and she knows it, standing at the curtain with her notes.
She has started to agree with it.
Not out loud. But somewhere in the last two years the year stopped being something that happened to her and started being what she is, the way a place of birth is what you are, and now she checks her own sentences against it before she says them. Would a woman with that year say this. Is she allowed an opinion about that. Is this too much for somebody who is mainly known for the worst twelve months of her life.
The man with the card looks up and smiles at her and lifts it slightly, meaning ready. She smiles back and nods. Her hands are cold.
You know the introduction I am talking about. Maybe nobody reads yours off a card. Maybe it is read silently, by the same three people, every time you walk into the same room. Maybe you do the reading yourself, before anyone else has the chance to.
You have been going in ahead of yourself for years, holding the door open for the year to walk through first.
What came down, and what did not
Paul writes to a church that has people in it telling them what they still owe and what they have to observe, and he cuts the whole thing off at the root with an image so physical you can hear it.
having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.Colossians 2:14
Handwriting. Not history. Not memory. A handwritten sheet of charges, itemized, accurate, hostile, the kind that gets read out before a person is allowed to speak. That is the thing He took down. He did not go back through the years and quietly change what happened in them.
You are living under a charge sheet that has already been taken off the wall. That is not encouragement, and it is not my opinion of you. Colossians 2:14 says the handwriting against us was wiped out and nailed to the cross, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of the image, who carries that from a letter to a woman standing at a curtain with cold hands.
Hold both halves, because everything in this message depends on holding both.
The record stands. Every month of that year happened, in the order you remember it, with the details you have never told anybody. God does not ask you to sign up to a softened version of your own life, and He never once tells you it did not happen. He is the only one in your life who has never needed you to be vague about it.
And the verdict is changed. The list of what it means about you, the sheet that gets read out first, the thing that walks into the room ahead of you: that came down. It came down publicly, nailed up where people could see it, which is Paul's whole point. Not filed. Not sealed. Taken out of the way.
You have a history that is still yours and a charge that is no longer standing. The word says He took it out of the way, and His Spirit is the one who lets a person hold a true memory and a changed verdict at the same time without either of them canceling the other.
The year is not your name
Here is what has happened to you, and it is worth seeing clearly, because it happened slowly and by kindness.
Nobody sat you down and told you the year was your identity. They introduced you. Over and over, warmly, with the best intentions, until a description of something that happened to you turned into a description of what you are. That is not a lie anybody told. It is a habit a room got into, and you got into it with them, and now you check your own sentences against it before you say them out loud.
You are being named by God, and He has never once used that year to do it. Scripture says He wiped out the handwriting that was against us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a person what she is now, in the present tense, in words that do not begin with a date.
Look at how He introduces people. Gideon is hiding when the angel opens with mighty man of valor. Simon is a fisherman with an unremarkable record when Jesus looks at him and says Peter. Saul is the most obvious case in the book: everybody in Damascus knows the year he has just had, and God's introduction of him to Ananias is not about it at all. It is about what he is going to be carrying.
None of them had their history denied. Paul talks about his own for the rest of his life. He simply stopped letting it do the introducing.
You have been given a name that does not depend on the room agreeing to use it. It is written that He took the handwriting out of the way, and His Spirit is the one who makes a new name feel like something you own rather than something you are trying on.
So here is the turn.
You are not waiting for the room to stop introducing you that way. It might. It might not. That is not where your name comes from, and the moment your name depends on a man with a card, you have handed a good and ordinary person a job that belongs to God.
You are His, and the introduction that matters was given before you got to the hall. His word says the handwriting against us was wiped out and taken out of the way, and it is His Spirit, not the atmosphere in a room, who makes that true in the body of a woman ten minutes before she speaks.
And there is nothing here for you to contribute. You cannot live the year down. You could speak in that hall for another twenty years and it would not remove one line of the sheet, because the sheet was never coming down by effort, and it is already down. Every attempt to work it off is a way of saying you did not quite believe what happened at the cross. Faith is not a payment. It is the open hand that takes what has already been taken down.
You have been let out from underneath a description, and you did not do it by being impressive. It is written that He took it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into the actual hall, the actual chairs, the actual ten minutes before.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, wherever you are standing. The authority is not yours by nature and it is not mine to hand out. It is Christ's, and what He has spoken is yours in Christ because He took the handwriting down Himself, and you speak here as an ambassador saying what the King has already said. He may answer in His own way and in His own timing, and that is His to decide, never a judgment on you.
- Card in his hand, you are not my name and you were never the whole of me. You are one year in a life God is still speaking about in the present tense. The record stands and the verdict is changed.
- Fear that the year is my whole name, you are speaking about a woman who does not exist. In the name of Jesus I am named by God, and He has never once used that date to do it. Scripture says the handwriting was taken out of the way, and it came down where everybody could see.
- Lord Jesus, You took the sheet off the wall and carried it out through the front doors. Your word says it was nailed to Your cross, and Your Spirit is the one making that steadier in me than any introduction. I am walking to that microphone as the woman You named, and I am saying both sentences on the way.
