The Pencil She Put Down at Fifteen

The desk lamp is the bendy kind and one of the joints has gone, so it will only hold one angle now, which is straight down. It makes a circle of light about the size of a dinner plate on the desk, and everything outside the circle is the ordinary blue dark of a child's bedroom at nine at night.

Her daughter is asleep down the hall. She has come in to find the reading folder and she has found it, and she is still here, because on the desk there is a school pencil case turned out in a heap. Sharpener. Rubber worn down to a gray nub. And pencils. The proper kind, the graded ones somebody's grandmother buys, still with the paint on the ends.

She picks one up. That is the whole event. She picks one up, the way you pick up anything, to move it out of the way.

And her hand knows it. That is the thing she is not ready for at nine at night in a bendy lamp circle. The weight of it, and where the balance sits, and the exact way her thumb goes. Eighteen years and her hand has not forgotten a single thing about how to hold a pencil.

She was fifteen. It was a Thursday, and it was not a cruel person and it was not a dramatic scene, which is somehow the worst part of it, because there is nothing to be angry at afterwards. It was somebody she believed. Somebody whose opinion counted, which is exactly why it counted. And they looked at what she had spent four evenings on, and they said one sentence, and the sentence was not even unkind. It was reasonable. It had a kind of care in it, the sort that thinks it is being helpful about the future.

She said nothing. She went upstairs. She put the pencil in the tin, and the tin in the drawer, and that was that.

Not a decision. She wants that understood, even by herself, even now. She did not sit down and weigh up a life and choose against it. Somebody she trusted handed her a sentence and she believed them, the way you believe a person who knows more than you do, and the believing did the rest without ever asking her permission.

There is a mark on the paper. She has made it without noticing, in the corner, near the staple. A short curved line, about an inch. She looks at it for a long moment as though somebody else has been in the room.

Then she puts the pencil back in the heap, straightens the folder, and turns the lamp off.

You know what that is and this is not about drawing.

There is a thing that was yours. And there was a moment, and you probably remember the room it happened in, and you set it down, and you have not picked it up since. Nobody here is going to ask you what it is. Nobody is going to guess at it either. You know, and He knows, and that is already two of you, which is a quorum.

Irrevocable Is A Strange Word To Find In A Kindness

There is a sentence in Romans that most people read straight past because it arrives in the middle of an argument about something else entirely. It is one of the few places where Scripture picks up a hard, flat, legal word and uses it about you.

For God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.Romans 11:29

Irrevocable means it cannot be called back. Not by the one who gave it, which is the point being made there, and therefore certainly not by anybody standing in a kitchen on a Thursday afternoon with a reasonable opinion.

You have a thing that was given to you and has never once been recalled. I am not being encouraging at you. Scripture says the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the ring of that word, who carries it off a page and into a bedroom with a bendy lamp in it.

Look at what that does to the arithmetic. You have assumed, quietly, for years, that the thing lapsed. That it had a shelf life, and that eighteen years of not using it is the same as it having gone. That is how it works with almost everything else, which is why the assumption never got examined.

It is not how it works with this. What was given is still given. The gap is real and the giving did not expire inside it.

You are holding something right now that was never withdrawn from you. His word says every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father who does not change like shifting shadows, and the Spirit is the one who makes does not change mean not in eighteen years either.

One Sentence Was Never A Contract

Now the harder half, and it needs saying plainly rather than gently.

You did not freely hand this over. That matters and it changes what has to happen next. A person who was talked out of something by somebody they believed did not make a trade. A person who was worn down, leaned on, mocked, frightened or quietly steered did not sign anything, because a pushed signature is not a signature. If somebody you trusted handed you a sentence and your life reorganized itself around it before you had a say, then what happened to you was not a decision you made and you are not required to keep honoring it.

And if some of it was yours, plainly yours, a thing you set down on purpose in a season you could describe exactly, nothing here asks you to account for that either. Nobody is going to itemize it. Nobody is going to ask you what it took out of you. That is not how this is being handled.

You have been sought out by God about this specific thing, and the seeking is not an audit. It is written that He came to seek and to save what was lost, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between being looked for and being looked into.

The record stands, all of it. The Thursday happened. The eighteen years happened. Nothing is being written out and nothing is being made prettier than it was. What changes is the verdict on whether it is over, and that verdict was never anybody else's to give.

You are being handed back what somebody else closed on your behalf. Scripture says He redeems, which is not the same as He excuses, and it is the same Spirit who makes redeem mean a real thing arriving in your actual hands rather than a warm idea about the past.
