The Word He Gave Away

The screen door is the kind that never quite latches, so he holds it with his knee while he talks.

It is a summer evening, half past seven, and the heat is coming off the concrete of the walk in slow waves. Somebody is running a mower two streets over. Inside, behind him, there is a plate on the counter with a fork already laid across it, and he had been about four minutes from sitting down.

The man on the step is a good man. That matters. Everybody in this story is a good man.

He is holding a clipboard and he is halfway into the sentence, the one that starts with we were wondering and has three or four more clauses to run before it gets to the actual request, and it is going to end with Saturday, and it is going to end with the whole of Saturday.

And here is the thing.

He has already said yes.

Not out loud, not yet. But somewhere around we were wondering, before a single detail arrived, before he knew what day or how long or whether he had anything else on, the answer had already fired. It went off in him like a light on a timer. By the time the man on the step gets to the end of the sentence there is nothing left to decide, and his mouth simply reports what was decided years before either of them was standing here.

"Yeah. Yeah, no problem. What time?"

They talk for another four minutes. Tools, weather, somebody's knee. Then the man goes off down the path with his clipboard and lifts a hand at the corner, and the screen door swings and does not latch, and he stands there in his own doorway in the last of the light with his hand flat against the frame.

And then he does a thing he has never told anybody he does.

He says the word out loud. Quietly. Just the one syllable, into the empty hallway, to no one.

"No."

It sounds ridiculous. It sounds like a word from a language he learned badly in school forty years ago and has not spoken since. He can produce the sound but it does not attach to anything. It is not connected to his arms or his calendar or his Saturday. It is a noise a man makes in a hallway.

He goes back in and eats the cold plate standing up, and he does the Saturday, and it goes fine, and everybody thanks him, and he means it when he says it was nothing.

You know that hallway.

You gave the word away a long time ago. Not last year. Decades. And I am not going to ask you how, and I am not going to guess, because I have watched people guess at that in front of a man and I have watched what it does to his face. You know when it went. You could probably name the season it went in.

What I do know is what it has been like since, because the arithmetic is the same for everybody it happens to. Every single thing that has been asked of you, you have done. Not one refusal in the record. And people call you dependable, and they are not wrong, and it is the loneliest compliment in the English language.

What Goes Missing With It

Here is what nobody tells a man in that hallway, and it is the thing that would have helped him most.

When the no went, the yes went with it.

Because a yes is only worth something if it was the survivor of a real choice. That is the entire value of it. When a man who could have said either thing looks at you and says yes, you have been given something. When a man who has no other available sound says yes, you have been given a reflex, and both of you can feel the difference, and neither of you ever says so.

So for decades you have been handing people something you thought was generosity, and it has taken every Saturday you own, and it has never once landed as the gift you meant it to be, because it could not. There was nothing behind it.

You are not a machine that produces agreement, and you were not made to be one. I am not diagnosing you. Scripture says Christ made us free and told us to stand fast in that freedom, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a firmer resolve on your part, who takes that off a page and into a hallway with a screen door swinging in it.

And before we go one step further, this house says the following plainly, because a great many men in that hallway need it said and nobody says it. If the word was taken off you rather than handed over, if you were leaned on, worn down, frightened, or too young and too outnumbered to have any real say, then hear it straight: a pushed signature is not a signature. Nobody is writing that up as a trade you made. What was taken from you is not a debt you incurred.

You have been carried this whole time by somebody who never mistook pressure for consent. His word deals in real liberty and not in polite fictions, and the same Spirit who searches a man's heart knows exactly what happened at that table and has never once filed it as your choice.

Stand Fast in the Liberty

Paul writes to a group of people who had been free and had let themselves be talked back into a harness, and his sentence has an urgency in it that most translations cannot quite carry:

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Galatians 5:1

Read the two halves. The first half is a completed act with a subject who is not you: Christ hath made us free. Past tense, finished, done by Him. The second half is the only thing left for you to do about it, and it is not achieving the freedom, it is standing in the freedom that has already been achieved.

Notice what the yoke image actually is. A yoke is a thing put on an animal so that its strength belongs to somebody else's direction. It does not remove the strength. It routes it. That is precisely what happened to you: you have never lacked strength. You have Saturdays of proof. What you have lacked is the ability to direct where your own strength goes, and for decades it has gone wherever the last sentence at your door pointed it.

You are free by an act that was completed without your help. Galatians 5:1 says Christ has made us free, past and finished, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a fact about your hallway rather than a doctrine about somebody else's.

And here is the thing this house says in every room, and it belongs here as much as anywhere. The record stands and the verdict is changed. Nobody is deleting the decades. All those yeses happened. Some of them were good and some of them nearly finished you and all of them are in your history and they are staying there. What has changed is who you are while you carry that history, and the change was not made by you and cannot be unmade by you either.

You have had one specific word bought back and put in your hands. It is written that where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty, and the same Spirit is the one who puts a word back into a mouth that had stopped being able to form it.
