She Let Him Take the Credit

The strip light in the workshop takes a second to decide, the way it always has. It flickers, thinks about it, and then comes on all at once, and the whole room is there.

Marta only came in for the ladder. It is behind the door, where it has been for seven years, and she could have reached round for it without looking. She does not reach round. She stands in the doorway with her hand still on the switch and looks at her bench.

There is a dust sheet over it. She put it there herself, folded properly at the corners, the way you cover something you intend to come back to. The tools are underneath, in their places. The vise is still bolted where it was. There is a jar of screws on the shelf with the lid on and a pencil beside it that she sharpened one afternoon and never used.

Seven years.

She remembers the room where it happened, and how ordinary it was. Somebody said his name. Not hers. He did not correct them. There was a half second, a proper half second, where she could have said the sentence, and she can still feel the shape of that sentence in her mouth. It was not even a hard sentence. It was five or six words.

And she smiled, and said nothing, and afterwards she told herself it did not matter, and by the time she got home she had told herself that four separate ways.

What she did not know, standing in that room, was that she was not giving away one thing. She thought she was letting one thing go. She was handing over the whole workshop, and the jar of screws, and the sharpened pencil, and every idea she would have had on a Tuesday evening for seven years.

Because the strange arithmetic of that half second is that it does not stay in the past. It comes back every time she picks something up. Her hands know it. She has started three things since and put all three down, not because they were going badly but because at a certain point in the making a voice arrives and says, and then what. And she has no answer for it, so she covers the bench and goes back in the house.

Her sister asked her last year why she stopped. She said she got busy. Which is true, in the way that things are true when you have arranged your life so that they will be.

The ladder is behind the door. She gets it. She stands a moment longer with the light on.

You know the bench I mean. It might not be a bench. It might be a notebook in a drawer, a language you were good at, a kitchen you used to fill with people, a voice you used to use in meetings. Somebody took something of yours and put their name on it, and you were there, and you did not say the five or six words.

You have not gone back to it since. And you have never told anybody that the reason is not the thing they took. The reason is that you were standing right there.

What God says about being put to shame

Joel is writing to people who have lost, and God does not open by explaining the loss. He opens by describing a table.

You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; then My people will never be put to shame.Joel 2:26

Read the last clause twice. Never put to shame. That is the sentence God chooses to end on, and shame is a strange thing to bring up if the subject were only the harvest. He brings it up because He knows what losing does to a person: it does not only take the thing, it takes the face. It leaves you unable to be seen doing the thing again.

You are dealt with wondrously by God, and the dealing did not stop the day you went quiet. That is not me being warm at you. Joel 2:26 says He has dealt wondrously with you and His people will never be put to shame, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the reach of the sentence, who carries that into a workshop at the moment the strip light comes on.

Notice what God does not do in this passage. He does not ask them to account for how it went. He does not require a version of events from them before He sets the table. The satisfying comes first and the shame comes off, and nowhere in it is there a step where the people explain themselves.

And notice what He does not undo. The years happened. The land was stripped and everybody knows it and Joel says so plainly, in the same chapter, in unflinching detail. God is not offering them amnesia. He is offering them a table, in the same country, with the same neighbors, who remember.

That is the shape of this whole thing, and it is worth saying in one sentence: the record stands and the verdict is changed. What happened in that room happened. You were there, and you did not speak, and no part of this message asks you to pretend otherwise. What is changed is what it means about you and what it is allowed to decide about your hands.

You have been kept by a God who deals wondrously, and He does not deal in forfeits. His word says His people will never be put to shame, and His Spirit is the one who makes that stop being a promise about someone else and start being a fact about the woman holding the ladder.

The thing being bought back is not the thing

Here is what usually goes wrong when people try to help with this. They go after the object. They want to get the credit back, set the record straight, make sure everybody knows. And sometimes that is right and good, and sometimes it is not possible, and either way it is not what has been eating you.

What has been eating you is not out there. It is the seven years.

The object left the room once. The workshop has been leaving the room every day since, quietly, at your own hands, on your own authority, because a woman who believes she forfeited something will not let herself start another one. That is the thing being bought back here. Not the object. The next one.

You are holding hands that were bought back, and they were never signed away in the first place. Scripture says He has dealt wondrously with you and His people will never be put to shame, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into ten fingers that have not made anything since.

And there is something that has to be said plainly, because somebody reading this is carrying a weight that is not hers. If the silence in that room was not really a choice, if you were younger, or newer, or outranked, or tired down to the floor, or afraid of a person with power over your week, then hear this: a signature that was pushed is not a signature. Silence that was pressed out of you is not consent, and nothing in this message treats you as somebody who traded freely.

Nobody is going to ask you which it was. Not me, not this page, and not God, who was in the room and did not need the version you have rehearsed.

You have been bought back by somebody with the right to do it, and He did not require your account of the day. It is written that He deals wondrously and His people are never put to shame, and the same Spirit who raised Christ is the one carrying that into a Tuesday evening with the sheet off the bench.
