Bought BackIsaiah 58:12

Her Mother's Quilt

This message is for the woman who gave away her mother's quilt in a hard year and is handed it back on the porch by a granddaughter who went and found it and asked for it

She is on the porch shelling into a pot when the car comes up the drive, and it is the granddaughter, and the granddaughter is carrying something folded over both arms the way you carry a sleeping child.

She knows what it is from the top step. She knows it from the color. It has faded the way that particular cotton fades, going from red to a kind of brick, and there is a corner where somebody once caught it on a nail and her mother mended it in a thread that did not match and never cared.

The girl comes up the steps and says, "Grandma," and cannot get the rest of the sentence out, and just holds it up in front of her with her arms shaking a little.

Twenty-six years ago, in a winter that does not need describing, she folded that quilt into a paper sack and walked it down to a house at the bottom of the road and left it there and came back and did not say anything about it to anybody, then or since. It was hers to hand over. She handed it over. That is the whole of it and she has never once talked about it.

The girl started asking last spring. She asked her aunt, who did not know. She asked at the church, which is where everything is known. She got a name, and the name had died, and the daughter of the name lived three counties over, and the girl drove there on a Saturday and knocked on a stranger's door and said, my great grandmother made a quilt, and it is red going to brick, and there is a mend in the corner in the wrong thread. And the woman went and got it out of a cedar chest and put it in her arms and said, take it home.

So here it is on the porch, in the last of the good light, and the girl is standing there with her arms out and shaking.

And her grandmother does not reach for it.

That is the part. She sits with the pot in her lap and her hands on the rim of it and she does not put her hands out, and about four seconds go by, which on a porch is a very long time. Because a thing you handed over stays handed over. That is the arrangement. She made her peace with it in a winter twenty-six years ago and the peace has held ever since, and if it comes back she has to have been wrong about how the world works.

Then she sets the pot down on the boards. And she puts her hands out.

You know that four seconds. You handed something over a long while back, and I am not going to ask you what it was, and I am not going to guess, and nobody reading this is entitled to know. But you know exactly what your hands do when somebody comes up the steps holding it.

Repair is not tidying. Repair is a seam.

There is a chapter in Isaiah where God is talking about a people who have gaps in them, and the word He uses is not a soft one. Breach. A break in a wall. A gap in a fence line that everything gets out through.

And He does not say He will make the wall look nice. He does not say He will paint over the gap or plant something in front of it so the eye goes elsewhere. He says something much better and much harder:

And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in.Isaiah 58:12

Repairer of the breach. That is a person who goes to the gap itself, in the rain, and works. And when a wall is repaired properly you can still see where the break was, because the new stone is a different color and always will be, and every mason knows it and nobody minds, because the point of a repair was never that the wall should look as though nothing happened. The point is that the wall holds.

You are living inside a repair and not inside a cover up, and that is far better news than the other one. I am not making that up out of kindness. Scripture says He is called the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths to dwell in, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the warmth of the picture, who takes that off a page and lays it on a porch with a pot of beans on the boards.

Look at the second half of it too. Restorer of paths to dwell in. A path is how you get back to a place. It is not the place. And what the gap actually took from that woman was not one quilt. It was the road: the idea that anything goes back the way it came. You have been handed a restored path and not merely a mended object, and the path was always the thing that mattered. It is written that He restores paths to dwell in, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a woman on a porch and not just a line about a city.

The door you shut behind it

So let me be exact about what is being bought back this afternoon, because it is not what you think and it is smaller and it is the thing you actually need.

It is not the object. I do not know what left your hands. It might be back and it might not, and I will not tell you which, and anybody who promises you the item is promising you something Scripture did not.

What is being bought back is the door you shut behind it. That quiet decision you made, in the year it happened, that a thing handed over stays handed over. You did not make that decision out of bitterness. You made it because it was the only way to keep going, and it worked, and it has held for a long time, and it has also been quietly running your hands ever since. You are being handed back the door, and the One with the right to open it has already turned the handle from His side. His word says He is the restorer of paths, which is to say the one who reopens the way back, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a person's hands and not only in their theology.

And now the honest part, said plainly, because I am not going to be careful with you when careful would be a lie. Some of what left your hands, you handed over yourself, with your eyes open, and you have never pretended otherwise. Some of it was taken out of your hands while you were told you were handing it over, by somebody older or louder or nearer than you, in a year when saying no was not really on the table. A pushed signature is not a signature. I am not sorting your history for you and I am not asking you to sort it for me, and the One doing the redeeming has never once needed you to work out which part was which before He acted.

And He is not going to unmake the winter. That happened. The paper sack happened, the walk down the road happened, the twenty-six years happened. You are standing in a changed verdict over a record that stays exactly as it is, and the mend is in a thread that does not match. Scripture says the ruins are rebuilt and the breach repaired, which means there was a ruin and there was a breach and the text says so out loud, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a woman hold that without shame. The record stands. The verdict is changed. And her mother never did care about the thread.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on your porch, in the last of the good light, with something being held out in front of you.

The door you shut behind the thing you handed over has been opened by One who had the right to open it, and it was not opened by you and it does not stay open by your effort. You are a person who receives, and you were never only a person who hands things over. That is not a compliment; it is written that He restores paths to dwell in, and it is His Spirit who makes that present tense on a porch rather than ancient and general.

I am not going to tell you what comes up your drive, or when, or in whose arms. He may hand the thing itself back and He may hand back something you did not know you had lost, and the timing and the shape of it are His and I will not put a date on Him. You have hands that are free to open, bought back by One with the standing to buy them. His word says the repairer of the breach, and the Spirit is the one who turns a title in a scroll into four seconds on a porch where a woman sets down a pot.

Nothing is being tidied away this afternoon. The winter happened. The mend is in the wrong thread and it will always be in the wrong thread. And the quilt is across the rail in the gold light and the girl is sitting on the top step, pleased with herself, and everything holds.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, on the porch or wherever your hands are. The right to say them was not worked up by you in the years since: Christ is in you, and the authority to speak His finished word over what left your hands has been given to you in Him, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries the words rather than the steadiness of your voice. Say them under His will and not yours, since what comes back and when is His to decide, and the redeeming was never yours to do.

  1. Door I shut behind it, you are not locked from His side. Scripture calls Him the repairer of the breach and the restorer of paths, and He has been working that seam while I was not looking. I am standing on my own porch in the name of Jesus with my hands open.
  2. Rule that what leaves my hands stays gone, get out of this house. His word says He rebuilds the ancient ruins and restores the paths to dwell in, and a path is the way back, and He is the one who reopened it. I have been wrong about how this works for twenty-six years and I am glad of it.
  3. Jesus, You are the repairer of the breach, and You never once painted over a gap to make a wall look untouched. I thank You, because Your Spirit is lifting hands that have been down a long time and putting something in them. I am naming it in one sentence, and then I am receiving it back.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
