The Terrace Nobody Was Near Enough For

This message is for the family whose olive terrace is about to pass to a stranger because no relative is near enough to have the right to act, and the cousin everybody thought was too far away who comes anyway

The terrace runs along the hillside in four long steps, and the dry stone wall that holds the lowest one up was built by a man nobody alive ever met.

It is late in the afternoon. The light has gone the color it goes in the last hour, and the leaves are turning silver and back again in the wind coming up the valley. There are nets spread under six of the trees. Two women are working the branches with their hands because the family has never used the poles on the old trees. A boy is asleep against the wall with an unripe fig he has bitten once and abandoned.

And down at the gate, on the flat stone where the elders sit, the thing is being decided.

The father is gone. He has been gone since the spring. And the terrace cannot simply stay where it is, because the way the village has always done it, a holding in trouble has to be taken up by a relative near enough to have the right, or it goes out to whoever is standing there when the season turns. That is the whole of the law of it. Not the one who cares most. Not the one who cries hardest at the graveside. The one who is near enough to have the right to act.

So they have gone through the family, out loud, at the gate, the way it is done.

The father's brother is dead. That is the nearest, and it is closed.

The old man from the upper village has the right, and everyone looked at him when the name was read. He put both hands flat on his knees and said that he is seventy-nine, that he has two terraces of his own his sons are already arguing over, that taking this one up takes it away from them, and that he is sorry, and he cannot. Nobody at the gate blamed him, because it was true.

After him there is a man three villages over who has not spoken to this family since a wedding eleven years ago and did not come when he was sent for.

And then the list runs out.

The women on the terrace know what is happening at the gate without having to be told, and they keep working, because there is nothing else to do with your hands at a moment like that. One of them says, without looking up, the name of the cousin. The one who went away. Everybody knows the name and everybody has the same answer to it, and the answer is the reason nobody put it on the list: he is too far. Three days on the road at least. He has a life somewhere else. He would not know. He would not come. And even if somebody had sent word, word takes longer than the season does.

The wind drops the way it does before evening.

And the boy asleep against the wall wakes up because somebody is coming up the hill road, and it is not the road anybody uses at this hour, and the man on it has three days of dust on him from his shoulders down.

You know that hill road. There is one thing in your life that people say they are sorry about and then change the subject, because being sorry is all there is. You have stopped bringing it up. Not because you have made peace with it, but because you have watched every person who loves you arrive at the same wall: they would if they could, and they cannot, and asking them again only makes them feel it. So it sits in you, unmentioned, the one situation nobody who loves you is near enough to touch.

Two things a redeemer has to have

I keep doors for a living, arrivals and departures, and I have stood at enough gates to know that most people's hardest situation is not a problem of love. It is a problem of standing. The people who love you have no standing in it, and love without standing can only sit down beside you and be sorry.

So let me put the thing you actually need in front of you, and it has two halves.

You have a redeemer who is near enough to have the right to act in your situation and willing enough to use it, and both halves of that are already true tonight. That is not my kindness laid over your evening. Scripture gives the man his title in the middle of a threshing floor at night, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the weight of my sentence, who carries a title like that out of a barley field and into a life like yours.

Spread the corner of your cloak over your servant, for you are a redeemer.Ruth 3:9

That word is not a compliment and it is not romance. It is the village law at the gate. The redeemer is the relative near enough to have the standing to act, and there is a whole chapter after that verse in which a nearer man is offered the right first and turns it down, because taking it up would take from what he was keeping for his own. That happens at the gate, in public, with ten elders sitting. Nobody in that story is shamed for it. The law simply moves to the next man, and the next man says yes.

Hold those two together, because everything in your situation turns on them. Right without willingness is the old man with his hands flat on his knees. Willingness without right is every friend who has sat with you and could not do a thing.

You have not been left with only the second kind, and the man on the hill road has both. It is written that God sent His Son, born of a woman, to redeem, and the Spirit is the one who makes that nearness real in a room rather than true in a book.

Nobody put His name on the list

Now here is the part of the parable that is really about you, and I want to be careful with it, because it is easy to hear wrong.

They did not leave His name off the list out of unbelief. They left it off because of arithmetic. Three days on the road, a life somewhere else, and a season that turns faster than word travels. Everyone at that gate could have told you they loved the cousin. They simply did the sums, and the sums said no.

You have done the same sums. You have not stopped believing in God. You have quietly decided how far away He is from this particular thing, and you did the deciding so long ago that it does not feel like a decision anymore, it feels like realism.

You are being reached in the one place you had privately written off, and the distance you calculated was never the real distance. Scripture says He is not far from any one of us, and it is the Holy Spirit who closes what looks on paper like three days of road.

And I am not going to tidy the history away to say it. The spring happened. The father is still gone. The eleven years of silence with the man three villages over are eleven real years and the wedding really did go the way it went. The record stands. The verdict is changed. Both of those are true on that terrace, and both of them are true in your situation, and a message that gives you only one of the two has lied to you about your own life.

You are held by a changed verdict while every fact of your history stays exactly where it is. His word does not pretend a family's spring away, it changes what is decided at the gate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person hold a real memory and a new verdict in the same hand without flinching.

The breakthrough

The one thing being handed back to you tonight is the situation itself. Not a feeling about it. The specific one you have stopped mentioning, the one everybody arrives at the wall of, comes back into the hands of somebody who has the standing to act in it.

You have someone acting for you who never had to be persuaded, and the willingness was in place before you found out about the right. Scripture says that while we were still without strength Christ died for us, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a sentence that old arrive as news on an ordinary evening.

He was never on your list, and He was already on the road. That is what the dust on a man's shoulders means. It means the walking happened before the news arrived, which is another way of saying that the answer left before the question did.

You have a Redeemer who lives, and He is not a title in a book of the Bible, He is the one with standing at your gate. It is written that our Redeemer is strong and that He pleads the cause, and the same Spirit who carried that line through three thousand years is putting it in front of you at the exact hour you had finished doing the sums.

What He does with the terrace and the season is His to decide, and He may act in a way nobody at the gate would have drawn up, and that is never a sign that the right was not there. The redeemer's right is not the same thing as your preferred outcome, and confusing the two has broken more faith than doubt ever has. If what is sitting on you tonight is heavier than a hard season, tell one real person today and let them sit in it with you, and let a doctor or a helper do the work God has put in their hands.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear your own voice. The standing to say them is not yours by nature; it is yours in Christ, and an ambassador speaks with the weight of the King who sent him and never with his own. Scripture is the gate and the Holy Spirit is the one who seats you at it. Speak to the situation first, then to the belief that you are too far out for anybody to reach, then to God. Whatever He does with the terrace and the season is His to decide, however He answers, and the right and the willingness are both His already.

  1. Situation nobody can reach, you are not outside anybody's right to act, and I am finished describing you as the thing that cannot be helped. Scripture calls Him my Redeemer, near enough to have the right and willing enough to use it, and He is standing in the middle of you tonight.
  2. Belief that I am too far gone to reach, you were arithmetic and you were never a verdict. It is written that He is not far from any one of us, and the Holy Spirit is the one who closes what looked like three days of road, and I say that to you in the name of Jesus.
  3. Lord Jesus, You had the right and You were willing, and You were on the hill road before anybody thought to send for You. I am naming this situation out loud and then naming You over it, and Your word says my Redeemer lives.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
